- Part 2 - GETTING STARTED
-
- This section explains how to Backup the distribution diskettes, install the
- software and data bases on your computer and execute STATMAN.
-
-
- 2.1 System Requirements
-
- STATMAN Baseball requires the following minimum configuration:
-
- An IBM Personal Computer or strict "compatible" running the MS- DOS or PC-
- DOS operating system version 2.1 or later, or OS/2 version 1.0 or later.
-
- Monochrome or Color Display, Hercules, CGA, EGA or VGA.
-
- One floppy disk and a hard disk drive with approximately 1 megabyte free
- space.
-
- At least 312K of free memory (after DOS and any TSRs are loaded).
-
-
- 2.2 Installing STATMAN
-
- If installing STATMAN from your hard disk using the shareware version, first
- make sure you have ample disk space available and unzip the STATMAN files into
- a temporary directory. At the DOS prompt in the temporary directory, type:
-
- INSTALL C: (or the destination drive letter) STATMAN will self-install
- and setup the correct directories. When completed, make sure you move
- all of your sample *.UPD files into the \STATMAN\UPDATE directory, and
- delete any *.ZIP files you may have in the directory.
-
- The following is the correct procedure for installing from a floppy drive.
-
- Prior to installing STATMAN, you should first backup any original
- distribution diskettes. The installation should be performed using the
- backup diskettes. If any problems occur while installing STATMAN that make
- the diskettes unreadable and you will have the original diskettes. Use the
- DOS command DISKCOPY to make a backup copy of each diskette. Refer to your
- DOS manual for more information on the DISKCOPY command. As an additional
- safeguard, you may want to place write protect tabs over the holes on the
- backup copies of the STATMAN distribution diskettes. This will prevent any
- accidental erasure of files.
-
- The floppy disk drive on your computer that will be used during the
- installation of STATMAN is usually called "A:". If you have two floppy disk
- drives, the second drive is usually called "B:". The example below assume
- that you have one drive called "A:". If you have two drives or if you just
- want to use the second drive, you may substitute "B:" for "A:" and place
- the floppy disk in the second drive and type the following:
-
- A: INSTALL C: (or destination drive)
- (Please refer to your DOS manual for more information)
-
- Approximately 830,000 characters of free disk space are needed for the program
- and data files.
-
-
- 2.3 Starting STATMAN
-
- In order to start STATMAN, enter the following:
-
- C: (switch to the hard disk)
-
- CD \STATMAN (change to the STATMAN directory)
-
- STATMAN (starts the STATMAN program)
-
- The software makes extensive use of pop-up windows for data entry and menus.
- The menus list the options that are available. You may select any of the
- options by highlighting it; press the up and down arrow keys and then press
- the "Enter" key to execute the option. You may also execute an option by
- pressing the number (or letter) next to the option on the menu.
-
- The "Escape" key can be used to abort any operation in STATMAN. If you make a
- mistake while entering data and just want to start all over again, hit the
- "Escape" key. You can also press the "Escape" key to back out of a menu
- (return to the next higher menu).
-
- If you need assistance, you can press the F1 key at any time. This will pop-up
- a help window that will provide additional information and assistance.
-
-
- Part 3 - SCREEN NAVIGATION AND DATA ENTRY
-
- This section explains the keys used to navigate through STATMAN's menus and
- how to enter data.
-
-
- 3.1 Online User Help Screens
-
- STATMAN comes with field by field context-sensitive help screens. No matter
- where you are in the program, you can hit the F1 key to get help. After
- typing the F1 key, the help screen will guide you with instructions for the
- field under the cursor.
-
- After typing the F1 key, a Help Screen will appear. The interior of the help
- box will display one or more pages of help information.
-
-
- 3.2 Navigating Menus
-
- Navigating through menus is a very simple procedure. Whenever the highlight
- is on a menu option, you can execute that option by pressing the "Enter" key.
- To select another menu option, move the highlight by pressing the "Up" and
- "Down" arrow keys. You may also type the letter or number that corresponds to
- the option you want and that option will be executed.
-
- Every menu in STATMAN contains an Exit option. The Exit option can be
- executed several ways. First, you can move the highlight to the option and
- press the Enter key. Or you can press the "X" key. Or you can simply hit the
- Escape key.
-
- The menus in STATMAN are organized hierarchically. This means that you will
- navigate downward through a hierarchy to get to the option desired. The Main
- Menu is the top of the hierarchy and is displayed upon entry into STATMAN.
- Selecting The following options from the Main Menu will take you to a lower
- level menu:
-
- Update Player Database
- Update Transactions
- Print Reports
- Fantasy Team Maintenance
- Fantasy League Maintenance
- Pro Team Maintenance
- Go to the DOS Interface
- Exit STATMAN
-
- To return up the hierarchy to the Main Menu, simply hit the "Escape" key or
- highlight the Exit option and press the "Enter" key. As you exit a menu, it
- will be removed from the screen to show that it is no longer in effect.
-
-
- 3.3 Data Entry
-
- This section explains the function of the data entry screens and the keys used
- to enter data into STATMAN.
-
- Data entry screens are used to enter data into STATMAN. The data entry screen
- will be displayed as a popup screen with field prompts, data entry fields and
- other information.
-
- Data Entry Fields
-
- To the right of the prompt is the data entry field. The data entry fields are
- the only place the cursor will move to and consequently the only fields that
- will accept keyboard input.
-
- Entering Data
-
- To enter data into a data entry field, just type what you want on the
- keyboard. As you type, the data will appear on the screen in the field. Each
- data entry field is limited in size; you cannot type more characters than will
- fit into the field.
-
-
- 3.4 Entering Dates
-
- Dates are always entered in STATMAN in the following format:
-
- MM/DD/YYMM = Month (01-12) DD = Day of Month YY = Year relative to 1900
-
- For example: to enter April 21, 1994, enter 04/21/94. As you are typing, the
- cursor will automatically enter the "/" (slash) character.
-
- Most dates entered into STATMAN are adjusted to be a week ending
- date. In STATMAN, a week is Monday through Sunday. If you enter a date
- between Monday and Saturday (inclusive), it will be automatically adjusted to
- the following Sunday (Sunday dates are not adjusted since they already specify
- the week ending date).
-
-
- 3.5 Pick Lists
-
- In order to make it easier to enter data, specific fields in STATMAN have the
- option to get a list of information for entry in that field. The list is
- referred to in STATMAN as a Pick List. They appear alongside certain boxes
- requring input. For example, if you are to pick a team of a player, STATMAN
- will have a box with a Pick List that has each team that can ben choses from.
- The same thing works with players. When looking for a specific player from a
- specific team, STATMAN will lists the available players from that team's
- database to chose from.
-
- You can select an item in a pick list by highlighting it with the cursor keys.
- Press the Enter key and the item will be selected. When there are multiple
- screens of data, use the cursor keys (up and down arrow keys) to scroll to the
- additional pages.
-
-
- Part 4 - Setting Up STATMAN
-
- The following procedures are suggestions in helping you to setup your
- own Fantasy/Rotisserie League. They are listed in order that would make
- it easiest for your league's setup.
-
- 4.1 Fantasy League Maintenance
-
- This Menu can be displayed by selecting "Fantasy League Maintenance"
- from the Main Menu, #5.
-
- The first thing that will need to be done to utilize STATMAN, is to setup your
- Fantasy League. This selection has a number of fields to type in the
- pertinent information based on your Fantasy League rules. All fields should
- have default settings that are based on "Official" Rotisserie League rules.
- These can and should be changed if your league has other designated rules.
- For example, if your league utilizes only National League players for your
- league, select National League from the box, alongside. It is IMPERATIVE that
- you set a season START date and season END date. These dates should be set to
- the FIRST Sunday following the Fantasy/Rotisserie League "Opening Day" to the
- FIRST Sunday "following" the last day of Fantasy/Rotisserie season. If you
- receive your STATS from our STATS Service, your season START date will be the
- date of the FIRST .UPD file of the season or first week your league starts,
- NOT "Opening Day".
-
- In addition, you will be required to set a fee for your trades,
- call-ups, I/R, activations, etc. You will also set the number of players
- per position allowed, Batting statistics, and Pitching statistics.
- The screen allows you to specify which statistical categories are to be
- included when calculating standings. If a category is to be included, type
- "Y" next to the prompt. If the category is to be ignored, type "N". The
- specifications that you enter here apply to all Fantasy/Rotisserie teams.
- There are a total of 10 Batting categories and 11 Pitching categories
- to choose from.
-
- These statistical categories are the same as used by official Rotisserie
- League rules. You DO NOT have to use all of these for your league; however,
- you MUST make your selection from this list.
-
- The Transaction Account for each team starts with a zero balance. Each
- time a transaction is entered (for example, a call-up), the owner's
- account is charged. Each time a payment is entered the account is credited.
-
- After you have setup your Fantasy League, the next thing will be
- setting up each Fantasy League Team.
-
- 4.2 Fantasy Team Maintenance
-
- This Menu can be displayed by selecting "Fantasy Team Maintenance"
- from the Main Menu, #4.
-
- The Maintain Fantasy Team Menu allows the adding, changing,
- deleting and destroying of Fantasy League Teams. Select #2, to
- add a Fantasy League Team.
-
- You will be prompted for information regarding a Fantasy Team. The
- League, Team Name, Owner's Name, Owner's address and telephone
- number are to be filled in for each Fantasy Team.
-
- 4.3 Drafting Players for your Fantasy Team
-
- Now, we are ready to begin our league Draft. Select #2, Update
- Transactions, from the Main Menu. From the Transactions Menu,
- select #1, Draft a Player(s).
-
- The date and the Fantasy Team drafting will pick a player from
- the Major League database. You will select the player from his
- Major League roster. You will have to type in the Fantasy League
- position of the player and his salary (or fee) which is to be paid
- to the league.
-
- Each Fantasy Team does this for each of their players until the
- draft is completed.*
-
- *It is SUGGESTED that your draft be conducted, FIRST, on paper
- and entered into STATMAN later. Reason for this is simple, some
- players that are being drafted, may not be in the CURRENT database
- and will NOT be until they actually accumulate some statistics
- during the season. All the players usually have stats within the
- first 2 - 4 weeks, though. You can use STATMAN in the interim; however,
- even though those players without stats will not show up on your
- rosters. Once a player accumulates statistics, STATMAN, automatically,
- adds him to the database and you can then add him to the correct team.
-
- You are now ready to use STATMAN:
-
-
- 5. Putting STATMAN to Work for You
-
- 5.1 Update Player Database Menu
-
- The most important feature of STATMAN obviously is entering the statistics.
- After all, without statistics, your league is meaningless and STATMAN is of no
- use, whatsoever. This being the case, we will start by explaining
- the different ways of entering statistics into STATMAN.
-
- There are two ways that statistics can be entered into STATMAN. The first
- method is manual; the user will enter all of the statistics for each of the
- players in the Major League rosters each week. The statistics can be gathered
- from publications such as newspapers, "USA Today", "The Sporting News", etc.
-
- The second and easiest way is to obtain weekly statistics from Fantasy Sports
- Software via our Bulletin Board, Data Exchange, and do an "Automatic" update.
- If you decide to subscribe to our service, we can either mail you the
- statistics weekly on a floppy diskette or you can access Data Exchange
- service via modem hookup and download them directly. The statistics
- service is more efficient and less time consuming for the League Secretary.
-
- STATMAN maintains 10 offensive (batting) statistical categories and 11
- pitching statistical categories.
-
- These statistical categories are used to calculate team standings. For each
- period, every player's statistics are accumulated to get a Fantasy/Rotisserie
- team total for each statistical category. Then all of the Fantasy/Rotisserie
- teams are ranked in each statistical category from best performance to worst
- performance. The team with the best performance gets the first place points,
- second get the second place points, etc. The points received in each
- statistical category are then totaled for each team. The total points
- determines the teams standings. This process is described fully in "The
- Official Rotisserie League Handbook". (Points distribution can be
- configured according to your league's rules)
-
- 5.1a - Automatic Update
-
- If you decided to subscribe to Fantasy Sports Software Statistical Service;
- whether receiving a weekly disk, or downloading the statistics from our
- bulletin board, this is the option you will use to update your statistics.
- This option can be reached by first selecting #1, "Update Player Database"
- from the Main Menu and then selecting #1, "Automatic Update" from the
- Update Player Database Menu.
-
- NOTE: The files you receive from our service will have a file name with the
- following format:
-
- UMMDDYY.UPD
-
- When the "Automatic Update" option is selected, STATMAN will
- search the directory specified on the System Paths screen for all files with a
- .UPD extension (the statistics files). It will then automatically update
- the player database with each .UPD file that has not previously been
- updated. Each weekly STATS file (.UPD) will take approximately 3-5 minutes
- on an 80286 machine and less on an 80386+ machine.
-
- While STATMAN is applying statistics, it is also performing player team
- changes. For example; if a player in the Major League is traded to another
- team, STATMAN will create another record in the data base for the new team.
- All of the data bases are adjusted for the new Major League team for that
- player; automatically.
-
- That is all there is to it!
-
- After the statistics have been imported into STATMAN, you will now want
- to know how each team did. STATMAN will print various functions to
- allow you to have a statistical summary, standings summary, etc.
-
-
- 5.1b - Manual Update
-
- This option allows the League Secretary to type in the weekly statistics for
- each player. This option can be reached by first selecting #1, "Update
- Player Database" from the Main Menu and then selecting #2, "Manual
- Update".
-
- A player from the database will appear in the "Manual Update" box with his
- Professional League, Professional Team, and Professional position. Use
- the arrow keys to move from field to field and manually type each
- statistic that the category is prompting. Press the "Escape" key when
- finished and press "Yes", "No", or "Quit" when prompted to update the
- player. This same procedure will be performed on each player in your
- database.
-
-
- 5.1c - Add a Player to DB
-
- This option can be reached by first selecting #1, "Update Player Database"
- from the Main Menu and then selecting #3, "Add a player to DB". This
- selection will allow the manual adding of NEW players into your player
- database. The league Secretary will manually enter all the fields to
- complete.
-
- NOTE: If you are using the "Automatic" STATS Service,
- STATMAN will automatically add any new players each
- week that accumulate statistics at the Major League
- level.
-
- 5.1d - Delete a Player from the DB
-
- This option can be reached by first selecting #1, "Update Player Database"
- from the Main Menu and then selecting #4, "Delete a player from the DB". This
- selection will allow the manual deleting of players from your player
- database.
-
- 5.1e - Set Eligible Positions
-
- This option can be reached by first selecting #1, "Update Player Database"
- from the Main Menu and then selecting #5, "Set Eligible Positions". This
- selection will allow the manual entry of player's eligible positions.
-
- 5.1f - Start a NEW season
-
- This option can be reached by first selecting #1, "Update Player Database"
- from the Main Menu and then selecting #6, "Start a NEW season". This
- selection will allow the deleting of a previous season's statistics
- without deleting the player database. We recommend that after the
- completion of a season, the League Secretary prints out the entire
- Major League Database with statistics to hand out to each team owner
- for use in contemplating the next season's draft. After that is done,
- you will need to START A NEW SEASON by using this function.
-
- 5.1g - Delete LAST update
-
- This option can be reached by first selecting #1, "Update Player Database"
- from the Main Menu and then selecting #7, "Delete LAST Update". This
- allows the deleting of the LAST "Automatic" update to your player
- database. If this function is selected, it will take a few minutes to
- run because it has to remove the last week's statistics for each player
- in the database. Please be patient when running this!
-
-
- 5.1h - Exit this Function
-
- This selection will allow an exit back to the Main Menu.
-
-
-
- 5.2 - Update Transactions
-
- This section describes the features of STATMAN that allow the maintenance
- functions such as drafts, trades, waiving of players, activation of players,
- placing players on injured/reserve, call-up players from the free agent pool,
- maintaining a Farm System, expanding a team roster, setting up a long-term
- contract for a player, making payments to the league, and changing a player's
- Fantasy League position.
-
-
- 5.2a - Draft a Player(s)
-
- This option can be reached by first selecting #2, "Update Transactions"
- from the Main Menu and then selecting #1, "Draft a Player(s)". This
- is the option that is selected to conduct your Fantasy/Rotisserie League
- draft. Players are removed from the draft pool and placed on a Rotisserie
- League team as the draft is taken place. Once selected for a Rotisserie
- League team, STATMAN will not allow a that player to be taken by another
- Rotisserie League team. This function allows the drafting of Major League
- players into your Fantasy Leagues that have been previously setup.
-
- Use your arrow keys to move around the screen. Select the date of the
- transaction first. From the box alongside that contains all of the Fantasy
- Teams, scroll and highlight the team that will be doing the drafting, and
- press the "Enter" key. Press the "Escape" key to bring up a screen requesting
- more information on the player being drafted. Use your arrow keys to enter
- the correct date, and from the box alongside, highlight and select the Major
- League team the player plays for. Another box will appear alongside with a
- listing of players from that team. Use the arrow keys to move to and
- highlight the player being drafted and press the "Enter" key. Next, a box will
- appear with player positions. Highlight and select the correct position this
- player will be assigned too in the fantasy league. Type in the correct fee to
- be assessed for the drafting of this player. Press the "Escape" key to save
- and you will then be prompted to save the transaction. Highlight the response
- desired and press the "Enter" key. At this point, STATMAN will prompt you
- with a question as to whether or not you wish to draft another player for this
- Fantasy Team. Highlight the response desired and press the "Enter" key.
-
- Continue entry until your draft is completed. We recommend that on
- "Draft Day" your league also maintains a "paper" backup, since some players
- being drafted will not be in the database. Once those player gather
- statistics, they will then be added. At this point, that player should
- then be drafted to his team inside STATMAN.
-
-
- 5.2b - Trade a Player
-
- This option can be reached by first selecting #2, "Update Transactions"
- from the Main Menu and then selecting #2, "Trade a Player".
- This function allows the trading of Fantasy League players between
- teams within your Fantasy League.
-
- Use your arrow keys to move around the screen. Select the effective date of
- the trade first. From the box alongside that contains all of the Fantasy
- Teams, scroll and highlight the OLD team that the player being traded
- currently belongs too, and press the "Enter" key. Now, from a box with a
- listing of all the players assigned to that team, use the arrow keys to
- highlight the player to be traded and press the "Enter" key. Once selected,
- another box will appear alongside with a listing of different player
- positions. Use the arrow keys to move to and highlight the position this
- player will be assigned too with his NEW team. Press the "Enter" key. Type
- in the fee that the OLD team will be responsible to pay for the trading of
- this player and press the "Enter" key. The next field will display a list of
- Fantasy teams to choose from to select the NEW team that this player is moving
- too. Highlight the correct team and press the "Enter" key. To save this
- trade, press the "Escape" key and you will then be prompted to save the
- transaction. Highlight the response desired and press the "Enter" key.
-
- Once this procedure is finished, STATMAN will move the player from the
- Fantasy Team that previously rostered him to his new team. All fees
- are automatically updated and an entry is posted in the Transaction
- Report.
-
-
- 5.2c - Waive a Player
-
- This option can be reached by first selecting #2, "Update Transactions"
- from the Main Menu and then selecting #3, "Waive a Player".
- This function allows the "waiving" of Fantasy League players, and
- returning them to the "Free-Agent" pool.
-
- Use your arrow keys to move around the screen. First type the correct date of
- the waiver. From the box alongside, select the Fantasy Team that owns the
- player to be "Waived". Next, from a box of players on that Fantasy team,
- highlight and select the player that will be "Waived". If your league's fee
- is other than what appears on the screen, type over the correct amount to be
- assessed and press the "Enter" key. Press the "Escape" key to save and you
- will be prompted to save the transaction. Answer "Yes" or "No" and press the
- "Enter" key. Answer "Yes" or "No" as to whether the fee has been paid for
- this transaction.
-
-
- 5.2d - Activate a Player
-
- This option can be reached by first selecting #2, "Update Transactions"
- from the Main Menu and then selecting #4, "Activate a Player".
- This function allows the "activation" of Fantasy League players, and
- returning them to the rosters from Injured/Reserve.
-
- Use your arrow keys to move around the screen. First type the correct date of
- the "activation". From the box alongside, select the Fantasy Team that owns

-
- The Print Standings option allows you to calculate and display the overall
- team standings. This option can be reached by selecting "Print Reports" from
- the Main Menu and #1, "Fantasy Standings" from the Reports Menu.
-
- STATMAN calculates standings in the following steps:
-
- 1) A team total for each of the statistical categories is derived using
- the team rosters, weekly statistics, configuration rules and player status.
-
- 2) The totals in each statistical category for all teams in the league are
- ranked from best performance to worst. The teams are awarded points in each
- statistical category according to their rank.
-
- 3) Each team's points are summed to get a team points total. All of the teams
- are ranked according to their total points. The team with the highest total
- points is the current leader. The next highest total assumes the next rank,
- and so on.
-
- This report and all reports in STATMAN, give the option of specifying a Target
- for the report; screen, printer or disk file.
-
- 5.3b - Statistics Summary
-
- This option allows the printing of a complete summary of each team's
- progress. It can be reached by selecting "Print Reports" from the
- Main Menu and #2, "Statistics Summary" from the Print Reports Menu.
-
- You can direct your report to the computer's screen, to the printer,
- or to a disk file.
-
- 5.3c - Player Statistics
-
- This report displays all of the statistics of all players in the
- Fantasy/Rotisserie League, and the Major League. This option can be reached
- by selecting "Print Reports" from the Main Menu and #3, "Player Statistics"
- from the Print Reports Menu.
-
- This report is essential in order for each Owner to know how each of the
- players on his team is performing. Without a report showing player
- performance, it is impossible for the Owners to determine what his team needs
- in order to improve. This report is broken down week by week and will allow
- the Owners the knowledge of a "streaking" player, one in a "slump", or even if
- one did not play for a period, thus, not contributing to the team. Any and/or
- all of this information can be used in determining the status of the player;
- whether or not the player is being considered for a trade or release, or
- whether or not the player performed well enough during the current season to
- have him remain on the roster for the next season.
-
- These statistics can be printed for your Fantasy/Rotisserie League, or you
- can printout the statistics of a Major League team.
-
- Select the league that has the stats that you want printed. You will then
- select the team, give the target information requested, and path, if needed.
-
- The Secretary may want to print the statistics report for each team in the
- league. This is no problem as STATMAN will generate a report for ALL of the
- teams.
-
-
- 5.3d - Transaction Report
-
- The Transaction Report displays information for every transaction entered into
- STATMAN. This option can be reached by selecting "Print Reports" from the
- Main Menu and #4, "Transaction Report" from the Print Reports Menu.
-
- In STATMAN, a transaction is recorded each time any action is taken effecting
- a player on a Fantasy/Rotisserie team. The following actions generate
- transactions:
-
- a player is drafted
- a player is traded to another team
- a player is released
- a player is placed on injured/reserve
- a player is removed from injured/reserve
- a player selected from the Free-Agent pool (expanded rosters, etc.)
- a player receiving a long-term contract
- a player drafted onto a Farm Team
-
- The selection screen allows you to specify which league and team are to be
- printed. The league can be American League, National League, or "
- Fantasy/Rotisserie League.
-
- The League Secretary may want to print the transaction report for each team in
- the league. This is no problem as STATMAN will generate a report for ALL of
- the teams in the league.
-
- You can direct your report to the computer's screen, to the printer,
- or to a disk file.
-
- This report will list each player on the Fantasy/Rotisserie League team and
- include all of the transactions that this player has been involved in since
- the draft. It will also list the cost of each transaction. Some players may
- not be involved in any transactions once acquired and have only one line
- listed, and others; through trades, call-up, Injured/Res erve, etc., may have
- multiple lines next to their names.
-
- When transactions are entered, STATMAN automatically updates all of the
- information on the player involved. STATMAN will automatically change the
- player's team, position, roster and if the player was involved in a trade will
- cease to use any future statistics of the player for his former team but WILL
- use the statistics for his new team. This report will tell the Secretary if
- the transactions occurred properly by what is displayed. This report can also
- help the team owner when evaluating personnel moves. For example, if a player
- goes on and off the disabled list repeatedly, that fact may have a bearing on
- whether the owner wants to keep this player, trade him or even release him.
- The report can also serve as a safety check with each owner to ensure trades,
- etc., were conducted properly.
-
-
- 5.3e - Free Agent Report
-
- This option allows the printing of "all" the eligible players in the database
- that are not on a Fantasy/Rotisserie League team. This option can be reached
- by selecting "Print Reports" from the Main Menu and #5,"Free Agent Report"
- from the Print Reports Menu.
-
- This list is used mainly by the Owners for calling up players and determining
- future transactions. It is also the source of entry to players that will
- be taken in your draft. After the draft, by knowing which players are still
- available, the Owner can use this information for determining roster moves,
- trades, etc.
-
- You can print players from the National League, American League, or BOTH.
- You can determine which position from these leagues you would like printed,
- or ALL. The players, along with all their statistics at the time of
- printing, will be printed to the screen, printer, or a disk. Pitchers will
- have pitching statistics displayed and non-pitchers will have batting
- statistics displayed.
-
- Whenever a player is selected from this pool for a Fantasy/Rotisserie League

- the Free Agent List.

- Fantasy/Rotisserie League.
-
- The League Secretary may want to print a current roster of each team in the
- league. This is no problem as STATMAN will generate a report for ALL of the
- teams in the league.
-
- You can direct your report to the computer's screen, to the printer,
- or to a disk file.
-
-
- 5.3g - Owner's Report
-
- The Owner's Report shows name, address, and accounting information for team
- owners. This option can be reached by selecting "Print Reports" from the Main
- Menu and #7, "Owner's Report" from the Print Reports Menu.
-
- This report is a record for the Secretary, of each Owner's name address and
- phone number. The most important reason this report is necessary is that it
- will also allow the Secretary keep track of charges and balances of each team
- Owner.
-
- For each Team Owner, the report will show owners name; team name; address,
- including city, state and zip code; and telephone number. Under this
- information, there is information displaying the Owner's current Draft
- Balance; transaction charges (spent) to-date; payments (paid) made for those
- transaction charges, and the current balance owed to the league's treasury.
-
- Draft Balance - This signifies the amount of money left in the Owner's account

- 5.7 - Go to the DOS Interface
-
- By selecting #7, "Go to the DOS Interface" from the Main Menu,
- STATMAN drops you out of the program to the DOS prompt.
-
- Sometimes, while running STATMAN, the user may have a need to temporarily get
- out of STATMAN to run another application. Rather than quit the program
- entirely and have to go through the complete process of bringing STATMAN back
- on line, there is a feature that allows the temporary drop to the command line
- and return quickly to STATMAN.
-
- When this option is engaged, STATMAN remains in memory, and a new copy of the
- computers command interpreter is also activated in memory. This may require
- more memory that your computer has. In that case the "Go to DOS Interface"
- will not be allowed.
-
- In addition, the application you start in "Go to DOS Interface" will need
- additional memory. Again, there may not be enough memory on your computer.
-
- This option is valuable for running small applications and entering operating
- system commands.
-
- While at the DOS prompt, a message will appear above the prompt reminding
- the user to type "Exit" to re-enter STATMAN. Once "Exit" has been typed at
- ANY DOS prompt, the user will return immediately to STATMAN.
-
-
- 5.8 - Exit STATMAN
-
- By selecting #X, "Exit STATMAN" from the Main Menu,
- You then will quit the program entirely and drop to the
- DOS Interface.
-
-
- 5.9 - Notepad
-
- The Notepad is a feature that makes STATMAN unique. It allows the League
- Secretary to make reminder notes or construct complete documents. The Notepad
- can be engaged at any time by typing the F3 key.
-
- Running a league requires constant monitoring of players on the
- Injured/Reserve list, etc., and the notepad will allow notes to be entered
- that reappear on a specified date. STATMAN can be configured to remind you of
- notes or just keep written records of events during the season.
-
- An example might be something like this. Kirby Puckett goes down with an
- injury and is placed on the 14 day Major League Disabled List. Obviously, the
- Fantasy League Owner that has Puckett on his roster would want to place him
- on Injured/Reserve. He notifies the League Secretary that Puckett has been
- placed on the 14 day disabled list. After verification, the Secretary allows
- the Owner to call up a player in his place. The Secretary may want to make a
- note to remind him in 13 days or so that Puckett is due to come OFF the Major
- League Disabled List. This way the Secretary knows to check and verify the
- status of Puckett at the Major League level. If the Secretary does not write
- a note, Puckett's return may be overlooked entirely.
-
- This is just an example of a possible use for the notepad. However it is
- decided to be used in your league, the Notepad will be an invaluable tool over
- the course of a complete season. The Notepad feature will prompt you whether
- or not you want to be alerted to the note.
-
-
- 5.10 - Calendar
-
- The calendar feature can be assessed by pressing the F-2 key. You can
- utilize this feature to keep track of important dates in your league.
- (Expansion of rosters, I/R returns, etc.) Use the "Page-Dn" and
- "Page Up" keys to navigate from one month to another.
-
- Part 6 - RUNNING A FANTASY/ ROTISSERIE LEAGUE
-
- 6.1 Setting Up the Fantasy/Rotisserie League
-
- Obviously, the first thing to review is Configuration, since this is the first
- thing that will be completed when preparing the Fantasy/Rotisserie League.
-
- Configuration should be setup prior to the draft. If Configuration is setup
- before draft day, then, the Owners and the League's Officers must get together
- before to discuss and setup rules, etc. The rules must be in agreement with
- all the Owners and Officers before the actual drafting of players begin. For
- example, basic things need to be discussed and agreed upon; the size of each
- roster, the Rotisserie League season Start and End dates, all the rules of the
- league, eligible positions, costs of transactions, Rotisserie League team
- names and abbreviations, and the format for conducting the draft. These
- things HAVE TO be decided on before doing anything with STATMAN.
-
-
- 6.2 Setting Up the Fantasy/Rotisserie League Rules
-
- STATMAN allows Twenty-One different statistics to be used in any
- Fantasy/Rotisserie League to determine each team's standings. This does NOT
- mean you have to use all eight, but you MUST select from the twenty-one
- listed. The League Officers and Owners are the ones that sit down and decide
- which twenty-one to use. It is conceivable that the Rotisserie League could
- use only the batting categories for its' league; however, that would not
- really be in line with REAL Major League baseball. It is doubtful that any
- Rotisserie League would want to set up their league like this, but the
- possibility DOES exist. A league could also be setup to use only PITCHING
- categories, or any variation of categories. The rules that STATMAN recognizes
- are those that are recognized by standard Rotisserie League rules. The only
- difference, STATMAN allows the league to CHOOSE from among those categories
- without having to use them all. The major ability of version 2.0, vs 1.35,
- is STATMAN's ability to allow the use of both leagues when drafting players
- at the Major League level. You can now have your Fantasy/Rotisserie Teams
- made up of American, National league players, or a combination of both.
- Of course, to use both leagues, your personal league should have rules
- allowing it.
-
- One last thing about rules and their purpose. The rules tell STATMAN to flag
- certain statistics from Major League player's weekly statistics and read them
- to their respective Fantasy/Rotisserie League team. STATMAN then totals ALL
- the statistics that the league recognizes and uses the points data to
- determine the Fantasy/Rotisserie League team's position for each individual
- statistical category. All the categories are then added up for a grand total
- for each Fantasy/Rotisserie League team. The highest number of team points
- will be assigned position number one in the standings, the next highest
- position number two in the standings, and so forth.
-
-
- 6.3 Determining Transaction Fees of the Rotisserie League
-
- Each league will have to determine the fees involved in belonging too, and to
- participate in the league through various transactions. Again, these fees
- are determined by the league's members. STATMAN will NOT determine how much
- money it will take to trade players, call them up, or even a starting balance
- to begin the league draft. STATMAN does have pre-defined fees entered
- according to the rules set forth by the concept's authors; however, your
- personal league will actually make the final determination as to the fees to
- be charged. These fees should clearly be thoughtout and explained to each
- new owner beforehand.
-
- Remember that fees are automatically displayed when entering transactions.
- You can overtype the amount while entering the transaction to effect a
- different transaction cost.
-
-
- 6.4 Specifying Team Size and Determining the Term of the League
-
- A couple of other very important things that need to be determined before the
- draft, is the team size and season start and end dates.
-
- The season START and END dates determine how to compute your league's
- standings.
-
- The START date can be any date the league's members decide on. It DOES NOT
- have to be the "Opening Day" of the Major League baseball season. STATMAN
- will only recognize statistics entered after the START date. If your league
- decides to start after the Major League "All-Star" game, then your leagues
- statistics will not be counted until after the game. This means that all the
- statistics accumulated by the Major League players prior to your league's
- START date will not be read into STATMAN, thus, not count toward the
- standings.
-
-
- The END date must be set to a date beyond the start date of your
- Fantasy/Rotisserie League. The END date should be set to the Sunday FOLLOWING
- the last game of the regular season. (If your league runs the same as the
- Major Leagues)
-
-
- 6.5 Owner Information
-
- Before drafting players, the league's members must decide who will and will
- not be awarded Fantasy/Rotisserie League franchises. Once all the Owners have
- been determined, this information needs to be entered into STATMAN. This
- information, along with the Rotisserie League team names and abbreviations
- allows STATMAN to allow a roster for each Owner, as well as, an account
- balance for tracing Owner's fees.
-
-
- 6.6 Finalizing your League's Preparations Before the Draft
-
- Probably the last thing that the league members will be concerned with prior
- to the draft is acquiring an up-to-the-minute ACTIVE Major League roster.
- This roster must be correct in order to perform the draft. If your league
- decides to subscribe to FANTASY SPORTS SOFTWARE's "Stats" service, your league
- will automatically receive a current Major League database that can be
- downloaded from Data Exchange or having our company mail it to you. If your
- league is putting this information together without the stat service, "USA
- Today" and the "Sporting News" are probably your best source of information.
- You can also use the database that is included each season with the shareware
- version of the program.
-
- 6.7 Conducting the Fantasy/Rotisserie League Draft
-
- After the members have been admitted to the league, all the start up fees
- collected and all the rules, etc., been configured into STATMAN, the next step
- is probably the most IMPORTANT aspect of your Fantasy/Rotisserie League. The
- Draft is where the whole thing really begins. It determines
- Fantasy/Rotisserie League rosters based on the various strategies of the
- Owner's involved in the bidding.
-
- Before a day has been selected for the draft, the league's officers should
- print out a complete list of ALL the "Free Agents" in STATMAN. Since no Major
- League players are currently on any Rotisserie League team at this point
- (assuming the league is just starting up) then, all the eligible major league
- players and their positions will be included with this list. You can also
- printout this list with all the players, by position, with previous season's
- statistics to hand out. It is suggest this list be handed out two or three
- days before the draft to give the Owners ample time to study each player and,
- maybe give the Owner time to look over the prior year's Major League
- statistics to determine a player's worth to his team.
-
- Next, comes "Draft Day", itself. This day should be devoted "completely" to
- the draft. Don't even think of doing the draft in two or three hours. Make
- sure there are ample snacks and drinks on hand as the draft is very time-
- consuming, and the members will get hungry and thirsty while studying their
- sheets and bidding during the auction. Although "Draft Day" is a long, drawn
- out affair, it is fun as the members will find themselves commenting on such
- and such player this and such and such player that. Since you're amongst a
- bunch of baseball junkies like yourself, you feel right at home and the
- process is really very enjoyable.
-
- How a player is brought to the floor for bidding is up to the members of each
- league, but once a player is put up for bidding, it is recommended that one
- officer (Commissioner or League Secretary) mediates the bidding, while the
- other sits at the computer and enters the information into STATMAN. It is
- suggested that each Owner keep a written account of the players they draft and
- the amount they paid for each player's salary. This way, there is a double
- entry of the process, STATMAN's and the Owner's.
-
- NOTE: Remember, that STATMAN must assign a MINIMUM of one point for every
- player drafted.
-
- Each Owner will need to determine what he will expend for each player in the
- bidding. Since he must have at LEAST one point to buy a player, if the Owner
- expends too much on, say, his first 17 players and has only 6 points (dollars)
- left and he has six positions to fill, he will not be able to bid more than a
- dollar on any of the remaining players up for bid. His poor strategy could
- really hurt him by not acquiring the talent he needed at the end of the draft.
-
- Please keep a paper "draft", as well, as this substantiates what actually
- took place and provides the owners with a written trail of players that have
- been drafted that may NOT be in the database at the time of the draft.
-
- 6.8 Statistics and STATMAN
-
- Think of STATMAN as nothing more than a bookkeeper for your Fantasy/Rotisserie
- League. STATMAN's job is to take the statistics that are entered into the
- program and use those statistics by sorting them into categories that will be
- read as belonging to a certain team. The statistics will then be used to
- compute totals that will be assigned to each team and those totals will be
- used to determine standings. STATMAN keeps a journal of everything that has to
- do with running a Fantasy/Rotisserie League, but keeping and utilizing
- statistics in a meaningful way is the primary function of the program. In
- order for STATMAN to use statistics properly, the statistics must, first, be
- properly entered. There are only two ways of entering statistics into the
- program.
-
- The manual mode is only as accurate as the statistics being entered. Each
- league will determine the source of statistics for themselves. "USA Today" is
- probably the most used source for weekly statistics; however, "The Sporting
- News" is also a very popular source for gathering statistics. When a League
- Secretary is gathering statistics, it is important that ALL the Major League
- players have their statistics entered. Even if a player is not currently
- rostered on a Rotisserie League team, he may be called up any time.
-
- Note: If your league is applying statistics manually, the league Secretary
- must keep in contact with Major League changes. It is not unusual, during the
- season, for a player to be charged with an AB via a fielder's choice or error
- on the defense only to have the error changed the following day to a hit.
- These changes MUST be reflected correctly in order for the player involved to
- have correct statistics and the Rotisserie League team to have it's standing
- computed with corrected stats.
-
- The automatic mode is the other way statistics are entered into STATMAN. This,
- by far, is the easiest, fastest and most accurate way of keeping track of your
- league. The League Secretary will not have to be concerned with newspapers,
- spreadsheets, etc., and entering all the stats by hand. With FANTASY SPORTS
- SOFTWARE Stats Service, we do all the hard work for you. If your league
- subscribes, each week we will provide a complete list of the prior week's
- statistics. Our company will either mail you a diskette each week with the
- stats, or you may download them from our 24 hour bulletin board service. The
- bulletin board service is the fastest way of receiving the weekly updates;
- however, it requires the use of a modem and, in most cases, a long distance
- telephone call.
-
- When using the automatic mode of entering statistics, a U??????.UPD file will
- be used to import. These files are easily entered into STATMAN and take less
- than five minutes from start to finish. Once the statistics have been read
- by STATMAN, the program will sort each Major League player's stats to be
- placed in the correct Fantasy/Rotisserie League team roster, and total all the
- stats of each team automatically. Once this has been done, reports,
- standings, etc., can be printed immediately for distribution to the other
- Owner's of the league.
-
- Note: Unlike the manual mode where the League Secretary has to monitor the
- Major League level for statistic changes, with the automatic mode of
- application, the stats you receive from our company will include updated
- official league changes and you will not need to be concerned with such
- things. You will also receive automatic Major League Trades. If a player
- moves from one Major League to the other during the season, the STATS Service
- performs this for you automatically.
-
- As you can see, the Automatic feature of entering statistics will save the
- Secretary and/or League Secretary many hours of detailed, tedious work. We,
- believe that running a Fantasy/Rotisserie League should be fun and not work.
- When determining the time and energy devoted to manually entering your
- league's stats, not to mention the time and energy expended correcting errors
- from entering them manually, the nominal charge for the stats service will be
- MORE than justified over the course of an entire season.
-
-
- 6.9 Reports, Using them Effectively
-
- What exactly do the Reports provide in STATMAN? We know that after all the
- data entry has been completed, STATMAN takes the statistics and applies and
- calculates the information to the proper places. Other than calculating
- standings, statistics would have no other function if it weren't for the
- ability of STATMAN to write reports from those statistics. These reports are
- an invaluable tool to use during the course of the Rotisserie League season.
- Matter of fact, they are absolutely essential!
-
- Standings
-
- This report shows how each team ranks in the statistical categories used by
- your league. Generally, this report is run weekly after the weekly statistics
- have been applied. It should be distributed to each Owner so they can
- understand how their teams are doing in relation to the Others. It will also
- give the Owner's that are not in first place, a realistic idea as to how far
- behind they are from first. Of course another use for this report is to allow
- the first place team bragging rights, as well as, provide fuel for barbs at
- those that are placed down in the standings!
-
- Team Roster
-
- This report should be given to the Owner's so that each Owner has a written
- report as to the active rosters of each of the other Owners. After awhile,
- the Owners will come to know which team the star players belong too; however,
- it is impossible to remember all the players. In addition to the
- Fantasy/Rotisserie Team rosters, it is recommended that periodically, the
- Major League rosters be handed out, also. This report may be substituted by
- the "Free Agent" report described later, or handed out with the "Free Agent"
- report. These reports will not only provide player names of respective teams,
- but also, provide playing positions, as well.
-
- Transaction Report
-
- This report serves as a log of all the League's Team activities. Owners
- should have their own record for transactions; however, they may want to get
- an "Official" league copy to check theirs against. This will be an issue that
- the Officers and Owners will have to hash out before the season begins. The
- Commissioner or League Secretary will use this report to check for incorrect
- transactions and verify that each transaction is correctly documented.
-
- Owners' Report
-
- This report documents total transaction charges and payment of fees. There is
- no real need to hand this report to the League Owners; however, if your league
- decides that each Owner will get this report, fine. This report will be used
- to monitor late payments, etc. Each league should set up some rules at the
- beginning of the season spelling out EXACTLY what happens to an Owner when he
- fails to make proper payment on time to the league. Expulsion, etc., is
- something that must be discussed prior to the situation arising later.
-
- Statistics Summary Report
-
- This report is an invaluable tool to everyone in the league. The Owner's
- should be given this report weekly in order to know how each player in the
- league is performing. Of course, the Owners will know from basic knowledge;
- however, this report will spell-out EXACTLY what each player is doing in the
- way of statistics. It allows the Owner the information needed to decide on
- trading or releasing players. It allows the Owners information on players on
- other rosters that may help in the decision whether or not these other players
- may be traded for. The report will give a pattern of streaks, slumps,
- possible injury, etc. All of this information is an immeasurable aid for
- player transactions.
-
-
- Free Agent Report
-
- After the League's Draft has been completed, the remaining players will be
- assigned to the "Free-Agent" pool. This report is a valuable tool for each
- Owner and should be handed out to each occasionally. When a player on a
- Fantasy/Rotisserie League team is placed on the Injured/Reserved list, his
- Owner is allowed to select another player to fill the space on the roster. To
- call-up a replacement, the player must come from this eligible "Free-Agent"
- list. How frequently this report is delivered to the Owners will be
- determined by the league.
-
-
- 6.10 Trades
-
- As explained previously, STATMAN will allow simple or complex trades between
- Rotisserie League Owners. The important thing to remember is for the Owners
- to get together and decide on the players involved and how they are to be
- moved around before the League Secretary gets involved. It is also important
- for the Owners to decide how the transaction fees for the trade is to be
- divided. It is conceivable that one Owner, in order to get the trade he
- wants, might be willing to pay ALL the fees, but, it must be understood
- beforehand in order for the trade to be made in STATMAN correctly.
-
-
- 6.11 Monitoring Players on Injured/ Reserve
-
- The League Secretary or League Secretary is responsible for monitoring Players
- that have been placed on Injured/Reserve. Since they are the Officers in
- charge of verifying information from an Owner in order to place a player on
- the list, it is also their responsibility to monitor the return of the player
- to the Major League roster.
-
- Normally, after verifying that a player, in fact, was put on the Major League
- disabled list, the Secretary should make a note on the Notepad in STATMAN as
- to the date the player is placed on the Rotisserie League Injured/Reserve List
- and the expected date of return. The date of expected return can be
- calculated by the number of days the player was placed on the Major League DL.
-
- The League will have to determine how the Secretary will receive official
- Major League information. Other than newspapers and television, there are
- telephone services available that can also provide the information needed.
-
-
- 6.12 Rotisserie League Treasury
-
- As explained earlier, when the league forms each Owner is required to pay a
- predetermined "franchise" fee in order to participate in the Draft and build
- a Fantasy/Rotisserie League team. This fee is placed into a League "pool".
- This "pool" will be decided by the League members, as well as, the physical
- location of the "pool". Normally, the League Treasurer will maintain the
- League's finances, but, the League's members will decided who is to be elected
- to this trustworthy position.
-
- Whenever there is a transaction within STATMAN, a fee is assessed (if League
- rules specifies). These fees are charged against the Owner involved. Once
- the Owner pays the League Treasurer, this fee is placed into the "pool". If
- fees are paid with money the "pool" may be nothing more than a bank account in
- a local bank. All the fees collected by the Secretary are placed into the
- "pool". It is this "pool" that rewards are paid at the end of the season to
- Owners that finish in the "money".
-
- STATMAN will keep a running balance of all fees owed by each Owner. It is the
- responsibility of the League Treasurer to collect the fees; however, it is the
- determination of all the League members to decide penalties for late or non-
- payments.
-
-
- 6.13 Keeping the Owners Informed
-
- A Fantasy/Rotisserie League is fun mainly because the interaction involved
- between all the Owners and League Officers during the season. The League will
- only be successful if proper information is disseminated to all involved. The
- easiest and most frequently used is obviously the telephone. The "Owner
- Report" should be given to each Owner at the beginning of the season so
- everyone has names, addresses and phone numbers of each other.
-
- Each week a normal set of reports will be given to each Fantasy/Rotisserie
- League Owner as a means of providing information needed to actually manage
- their teams. The reports that are actually given out will be determined by
- each league.
-
- Of course, Owners are responsible for their own decisions, which means they
- will receive much of their information on their own from watching games and
- news on television, listening to the radio, or reading articles in newspapers
- or magazines. The more determined the Owner to gather timely information,
- generally will mean a higher place in the standings when the season is
- completed.
-
- 6.14 Backing Up your Data
-
- Backing up all of the STATMAN data bases cannot be stressed enough. Most
- anyone familiar with computers and, especially hard disks, know that they are
- prone to fail at the most inopportune time. If, when these failures occur
- there is not satisfactory backups, all the time and effort devoted will be
- lost forever!
-
- Of course you can backup your data to another drive, but the best and safest
- way is to back your data is to a diskette and store them in a safe place. It
- is not a bad idea to backup your backups. That way if you have a diskette
- failure, you still have another shot at retrieving your data lost when your
- hardware failed. However you determine to backup is your business, just DO
- IT! If you do not have your data backed up and you have a failure your entire
- league will fall apart. THEN, there will be the fallout of who gets what from
- the fee "pool". It would be a total NIGHTMARE! It is suggested that more than
- one party keep the backed-up data.
-
