  9. System requirements
  10. -------------------
  11. To install and run the College Hoops Pick-Em Pool Extravaganza!,
  12. your computer system must have the following:
  13.  
  14.   * IBM-compatible PC, running an 80286 microprocessor or higher.
  15.   * DOS version 3.3 or higher.
  16.   * Microsoft Windows 3.1 (version 3.0 or below will NOT run).
  17.   * 2 MB of system RAM.
  18.   * 2 MB of free hard disk space.
  19.   * A mouse or other pointing device.
  20.   * VGA monitor (color monitor recommended).
  21.   * A printer is not required, but is recommended to take advantage
  22.     of the software's printed reports.
  23.  
  24. Please note from the above that the College Hoops Pick-Em Pool 
  25. Extravaganza! is a WINDOWS 3.1 program, and will NOT run in DOS
  26. without Windows 3.1.
  27.  
  28. Software setup
  29. --------------
  30. To setup the College Hoops Pick-Em Pool software, copy the program
  31. files into their own subdirectory of your hard disk, and launch Windows
  32. the way you normally do.  When the Windows Program Manager appears:
  33.  
  34.   - Select 'File' and then 'New' to create a Program Group called 
  35.     'College Hoops'.
  36.  
  37.   - Select 'File' and then 'New' to put a college hoops Program Item
  38.     into the group.  Follow these guideline in the 'Program Item 
  39.     Properties' window:

  45. Note: <path> denotes that you should enter the FULL PATH to the 
  46. directory on your hard disk in which you copied the College Hoops files.

  48. Program documentation
  49. ---------------------
  50. If you have the Windows Notepad utility on your system, select 'File'
  51. and 'New' from the Program Manager menu to install the help files into 
  52. your College Hoops program group.  Use the following guidelines to do
  53. this once for each of the three available help files:
  54.

  61. The three Notepad icons that get installed can be used to access the 
  62. College Hoops help files (including this one) directly from the 
  63. Program Manager. These same help files can also be accessed from 
  64. within the College Hoops program by selecting Help from the main 
  65. menu.  Again, information is presented on-screen using Notepad.
  66.  
  67. If you do not have Notepad on your system, you can still use your own 
  68. word processor to view or print the College Hoops help files.  If you 
  69. wish to install Notepad, it comes standard with Windows 3.1.  Refer 
  70. to your original Windows documentation for further information.
  71.  
  72. It is strongly recommended that you print all of the College Hoops
  73. help files using Notepad or some other word processor so you can
  74. readily refer to them whenever necessary.  These files document 
  75. everything you need to know about setting up and using the software.
  76.  
  77. The help files are in readable text (ASCII) format, and appear in your 
  78. College Hoops directory as:
  79.  
  80.      *  SYSTEM.HLP - program installation and setup (this file).
  81.      *  POOLSET.HLP - setting up a College Hoops Pick-Em pool.
  82.      *  FEATURES.HLP - a point by point explanation of everything that
  83.     the College Hoops program does, and how to use each feature.
  84.  
  85. Running the program
  86. -------------------
  87. Start the College Hoops Pick-Em Pool Extravaganza! as you would any 
  88. Windows application:  By double-clicking on the College Hoops icon 
  89. with your mouse, or by highlighting the icon and pressing Enter on 
  90. your computer keyboard.  The main screen will appear with a title 
  91. window and copyright notice.  
  92.  
  93. The program is completely comprised of standard Windows menus, buttons, 
  94. controls, icons, etc. with which all Windows users will be immediately 
  95. familiar.
  96.  
  97. You may note that the College Hoops program runs in a full-screen 
  98. ("maximized") window.  This is because some of the most important 
  99. windows in the program are too big to fit into a "normal" sized window.
  100. Use the sizing buttons to reduce the size of the College Hoops window 
  101. if you need to view other parts of your Windows desktop.  Simply 
  102. maximize the window again when you return to the College Hoops program.
  103.  
  104. Make selections from the Main Menu using the mouse or menu "hot keys"
  105. (press 'Alt' to get to the menu, and then press the underlined letter
  106. in the menu to make your selection).  At that point, a sub-menu will
  107. appear with a list of College Hoops Pick-Em Pool functions.  Again, 
  108. use the mouse or hot keys to make a selection.  The title window will 
  109. disappear, and your menu selection will be activated.  From then on, 
  110. the title window will no longer appear, and the main screen will be 
  111. blank between selections.

  113. Enhancing the look of the program
  114. ---------------------------------
  115. The College Hoops Pick-Em Pool windows take on the system colors that 
  116. you assign to your Windows environment.  If you wish to change the 
  117. system colors, activate the 'Main' program group from the Program 
  118. Manager, and choose 'Control Panel' from the group.  Then select the 
  119. 'Color' icon, and click on the 'Color Palette' button to set your 
  120. colors (select 'Help' for more information).
  121.  
  122. The College Hoops program looks best if you choose an attractive, 
  123. dark color for the Active Title Bar, the Inactive Title Bar, and the 
  124. Menu Highlight bar.  Use a light color - like white - for the text 
  125. in these bars.  Also, the program will look nicer if you choose a 
  126. light, pleasant-to-look-at color for the Application Workspace.  
  127. Something like a pale yellow or egg-shell white fits the bill just 
  128. right.  Experiment with the colors on your particular system until 
  129. you find the ones you like best.
  130.  
  131. Setting up more than one pool at a time
  132. ---------------------------------------
  133. To set up more than one pool for a college hoops tournament, copy the
  134. files HOOPS.EXE and MERGE.EXE into DIFFERENT subdirectories on your
  135. hard disk for each pool that you want to run.  Then launch Windows
  136. the way you normally do, and choose 'File' and 'New' from the Program 
  137. Manager menu to add a new College Hoops icon for each separate pool.

  140. Repeat the above procedure for EACH pool that you want to set up.  
  141. Be sure to assign each pool a UNIQUE description and a UNIQUE directory 
  142. path in the 'Program Item Properties' window.  This ensures that the 
  143. data you enter for the different pools will remain separate on your 
  144. hard disk, and that you will have different icons to click on in 
  145. the College Hoops group of the Windows Program Manager.
