  15.                            Welcome to PC-FasType/VGA
  16.                            =========================

  18.      NOTE: Please take a few moments to carefully read this file before
  19.      doing anything.  This file will give you an overview of hardware
  20.      requirements, installation instructions, and how to quickly get
  21.      started using the program.
  22.  
  23.           PC-FasType/VGA is a typing tutorial program SPECIFICALLY designed
  24.      for VGA quality monitors and the 101-Key Standard Keyboard sold with
  25.      computers running under the MS-DOS operating system.  The INSTALLATION
  26.      instructions on the next page will get you up and running quickly.

  29.      HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS:
  30.           PC-FasType/VGA is distributed on one 360KB 5.25" floppy, or one
  31.      720KB 3.50" mini-floppy and requires the following minimum equipment
  32.      to run properly:
  33.  
  34.           o  Any Intel 286, 386, 486, or compatible computer; any IBM-AT or
  35.              IBM PS/2 - except the Model 30 with CMOSCLK.SYS
  36.           o  512KB RAM (computer memory)
  37.           o  A HARD DISK or high-capacity floppy disk with at least 650kb
  38.              of available disk space
  39.           o  MS-DOS - Version 3.3 and higher; (MS-DOS 5.0 preferred)
  40.           o  VGA display capability - (will NOT work on EGA or CGA)
  41.           o  At least one Floppy disk drive; 3.5" or 5.25"

  44.                     ****   INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS   ****
  45.  
  46.           If you downloaded PC-FasType/VGA from a BBS then all you had to
  47.      do was uncompress the files, so you can ignore this section.   If you
  48.      received PC-FasType/VGA on a disk then please read on for installation
  49.      instructions.
  50.  
  51.           If your PC doesn't have a hard disk please go the SPECIAL
  52.      INSTRUCTIONS below.
  53.  
  54.           You can install PC-FasType/VGA onto a hard disk, or from one hard
  55.      disk sub-directory to another sub-directory, from a hard disk to a
  56.      high-capacity floppy (1.2MB or 1.44MB), or from the distribution
  57.      floppy to a high-capacity floppy.  The easiest installation is from
  58.      the distribution floppy disk to a hard disk sub-directory.  This can
  59.      be done by inserting the PC-FasType/VGA Shareware disk into one of
  60.      your floppy disk drives and making it the default drive.  Start the
  61.      install process by typing the following at the MS-DOS prompt:
  62.  
  63.                          A>  install  <Ent>
  64.  
  65.           When you select the "Install PC-FasType" menu item from the
  66.      Install menu list, the program will install PC-FasType/VGA and all its
  67.      documentation files in the destination of your choice.  The default
  68.      destination is C:\FASTYPE.  You can change this at installation time.
  69.  
  70.           IMPORTANT NOTE: PC-FasType/VGA CANNOT be installed onto a 360kb
  71.      (low capacity) floppy disk.
  72.  
  73.           If you're installing onto a larger capacity floppy, then you'll
  74.      only need only ONE blank diskette.  This includes any of the
  75.      following:  720kb 3.5", 1.2mb 5.25", 1.44mb 3.5", or any of the new
  76.      larger capacity floppies.  These disks will hold ALL of PC-FasType's
  77.      uncompressed files.  You can label the high-capacity  disk as
  78.      "PC-FasType Working Copy".
  79.

  81.                            ** SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS**
  82.                 FOR PC'S WITH 2 FLOPPY DRIVES AND *NO* HARD DISK
  83.           ============================================================
  84.           If your  2-floppy PC has NO HARD DISK - you  HAVE  to do the
  85.           following BEFORE you install PC-FasType from one floppy disk
  86.           to  another  high-capacity  floppy  disk:    Make  sure  the
  87.           distribution (source)  diskette is writeable (i.e. the write
  88.           protect notch  is not  blocked); then  COPY the  file  named
  89.           COMMAND.COM from  your DOS  boot  disk  to  this  PC-FasType
  90.           distribution disk  - the  disk that you are installing FROM.
  91.           If you  don't do  this step  - THE  INSTALL WON'T WORK!  The
  92.           system has  to have  COMMAND.COM present  while the  install
  93.           program is operating.
  94.           ============================================================

  97.                           HOW TO DO A "QUICK INSTALL"
  98.      ======================================================================
  99.  
  100.           If you're an experienced PC user or want to get started quickly,
  101.      or if you're still having install problems after following the above
  102.      instructions, you can bypass the standard install program and just run
  103.      the compressed executables and specify a target drive and
  104.      subdirectory.  To uncompress and load all of the files onto your hard
  105.      drive or high capacity floppy, place the distribution disk in floppy
  106.      drive A: or B: and make it the default drive, then type any of the
  107.      following pair of commands at the DOS prompt:
  108.  
  109.           A:> ftvga11 -eC:\fastype  <ent>  -- install to hard-drive C:
  110.           A:> ftvdoc11 -eC:\fastype  <ent> -- install documentation
  111.  
  112.           A:> ftvga11 -eB:  <ent>  -- install to high-capacity diskette B:
  113.           A:> ftvdoc11 -eB:  <ent> -- install documentation too.
  114.  
  115.           B:> ftvga11 -eA:  <ent>  -- install to high-capacity diskette A:
  116.           B:> ftvdoc11 -eA: <ent>  -- install documentation too.

  119.      and PC-FasType/VGA will be installed on your disk drive and/or sub-
  120.      directory named after the "-e" command-line switch.
  121.      ======================================================================

  124.      TO RUN PC-FASTYPE/VGA:
  125.           Before you can run PC-FasType/VGA, it must be "installed" on
  126.      either a high-capacity floppy disk or your hard drive.  See the
  127.      INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS above for more information.
  128.  
  129.           After you've installed PC-FasType/VGA, you can run the program by
  130.      simply typing "FT" and pressing the Enter Key <Ent>.
  131.

  133.      WHAT TO DO NEXT:
  134.           PRESS ANY KEY TO GET PAST THE TITLE SCREEN AND SHAREWARE
  135.      INFORMATION SCREEN.  After these screens are displayed and the tables
  136.      loaded, the Main Menu will be displayed.  The menu selector bar will
  137.      be resting on the 'Begin Typing' selection.  Just press the Enter key
  138.      or function key F10 to start a typing drill of the HOME keys.  To
  139.      return to the Main Menu during typing,  press the Escape key.

  142.      WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO:
  143.           For DRILLS:  Place the fingers of each hand on the home keys
  144.      (ASDF JKL;) and type each letter as you are prompted for it.  The
  145.      program selects the letters randomly.  The number of characters you
  146.      have to successfully type is displayed at the top of the screen and
  147.      will count down to zero as you successfully type each character.  When
  148.      the drill is finished your WPM and other statistics will be displayed
  149.      on a typing statistics screen.
  150.           For EXERCISES:  lines of text will be displayed above the screen
  151.      keyboard; type each character pointed to by the house-shaped cursor
  152.      () and when you reach the  symbol or end of the line, press the
  153.      enter key (for "carriage-return"), or the space bar.  When you finish
  154.      typing the exercise your WPM and other statistics will be displayed.
  155.  
  156.           This version of PC-FasType has "SyncChek".  As you follow the
  157.      cursor while typing exercise lines, sometimes you can be "off-by-one".
  158.      That is, the letters you are typing don't match the letter over the
  159.      cursor - you're "off-by-one", - either ahead or behind.  SyncChek will
  160.      solve that problem.  This feature will detect that you're typing "off-
  161.      by-one" and adjust the cursor's position accordingly, either one ahead
  162.      or one behind, thus putting you back on track.  Your keystroke penalty
  163.      for being "off-by-one" is at most two keystrokes instead of the usual
  164.      six or seven.

  167.      SELECTING MENU ITEMS:
  168.           When menu's are displayed, use the arrow keys (cursor keys) to
  169.      move the menu selector bar up and down the menu.  Select the drill,
  170.      exercise, or option by pressing the enter key when the item you want
  171.      is highlighted by the menu selector bar.  You can use the function
  172.      keys as a short-cut.  In most cases, the item you select will be
  173.      check-marked.  You must ALWAYS select BEGIN TYPING or press F10 to
  174.      begin typing.

  177.      WHILE RUNNING:
  178.           MENUS:
  179.             There are five drill, exercise, and feature selection menus and
  180.             3 sub-menus for selecting additional keys to learn.  The
  181.             primary menus can be displayed by pressing function keys F1 to
  182.             F5 anytime while the screen keyboard is displayed.

  184.           <Esc>ape key:
  185.             Pressing the Escape key anytime during a drill or exercise will
  186.             cause the drill or exercise to terminate and your current WPM
  187.             to be displayed; pressing the Escape key again will display the
  188.             menu where you started the exercise.

  190.           QuickHELP:
  191.             ALL menus have the QuickHELP Facility available.  For all
  192.             menus, the function key F1 is always the HELP key.  When you
  193.             select HELP, a QuickHELP Facility  Menu will be displayed; the
  194.             selector bar will rest on the item matching your help request.
  195.             Follow the instructions given on the bottom of the menu.

  198.      EVALUATION PERIOD:
  199.           You are licensed to operate PC-FasType/VGA on your PC for testing
  200.      and evaluation as to its usefulness to you, on a trial basis for 30
  201.      days.  We believe this to be a fair and equitable time period for
  202.      evaluation and we trust your good judgement and sense of fair play in
  203.      making a decision regarding registration.

  206.      DOCUMENTATION:
  207.           The PC-FasType/VGA User Guide is included on the distribution
  208.      disk in a compressed format.  The INSTALL program will uncompress it
  209.      and install it along with the program files.   The complete User Guide
  210.      is about 66 pages long if you print it out, but if you register you'll
  211.      receive a handsomely printed and bound User Guide.

  224.           Site licenses and right-to-copy licenses are available for all
  225.      organizations.  Educational institutions requesting "LAB-PACK" pricing
  226.      can use our Right-To-Copy price schedule.  Read the file named
  227.      SITELICE.DOC for licensing details and complete pricing.

  230.      DATED SOFTWARE:
  231.           If today's date (the date you are reading this) is a year or more
  232.      later than the file dates on this distribution disk than please
  233.      contact Trendtech Corporation for information about the availability
  234.      of a more current version of PC-FasType/VGA.  Shareware tends to
  235.      "acquire a life of its own" once it's released; not all vendors and
  236.      BBS sysops will bother to acquire the latest version from the author.
  237.      That is why you should only buy or download Shareware from disk
  238.      vendors or BBS's who are authorized "Associate Members of the A.S.P."
  239.  
  240.           The "Single-User" registration fee and all site and right-to-copy
  241.      licensing fees are guaranteed through Dec. 31, 1995.  If you're
  242.      reading this file now and 1995 is history, chances are there's been a

  246.      VIRUSES:
  247.           You can only be sure of getting a top-quality virus-free version
  248.      of any ASP Shareware product by obtaining your copy directly from the
  249.      author, or from a disk vendor who is an Associate Member of the
  250.      Association of Shareware Professionals, or from a reputable BBS
  251.      service.  Be suspicious of any program you download from a BBS or of a
  252.      disk obtained from a local disk vendor, whose file dates or copyright
  253.      notices are more than two years old.  If it's a Shareware product,
  254.      contact the author directly for information about current versions.
