Two Cleveland Indians pitchers were killed and a third seriously injured as a result of a boating accident March 22 in Lake County, Florida.
Steve Olin, 27, the Indians' ace relief pitcher, and Tim Crews, 31, died of head injuries after the boat Crews was driving ran into a dock on Little Lake Nellie. A third pitcher, Bob Ojeda, suffered serious head injuries.
Authorities later said Crews was legally drunk when the boat rammed the wooden dock.
The two deaths marked the first time active players had died since the death of New York Yankees catcher Thurman Munson, killed in an airplane crash in August 1979.
Ojeda recovered and returned to baseball, pitching Aug. 7 for the first time against the Baltimore Orioles.
