UNION, S.C. - Hundreds of mourners crowded into a small town church Sunday, bidding farewell to two young brothers they'd come to know while agonizing over their deaths.
David Smith, 24, sobbed as he stared at a photograph of sons Alex, 14 months, and Michael, 3, atop the child-sized casket they shared. Then, he leaned over and kissed the small, white box.
Outside, hundreds listened on speakers. Blue and white ribbons hung from oak trees lining the approach to the church. Four ministers conducted the service.
"It's wrong," cried Smith, as he was led away after the 45-minute service at Buffalo United Methodist Church. "It's just wrong."
During the funeral service, the Rev. Bob Cato said the boys were "at home with the Lord."
The boys' mother, Susan Smith, 23, remains in prison. She faces murder charges after confessing that she drove her 1990 Mazda into a lake - with her sons strapped into car seats. She originally said the boys had been kidnapped.
Newsweek reports today that Smith, under a suicide watch, told police she watched as Michael awoke and struggled "in absolute terror for his life" before the car disappeared into murky waters.
But her lawyer, David Bruck, says the story "is simply made up."
The case is attracting TV talk-show interest. Host Oprah Winfrey held a local town hall meeting Saturday. At Sunday's services: host Sally Jessy Raphael and staff from The Maury Povich Show.
