  3. A flesh-eating bacteria Britons are calling "galloping gangrene" kills 150 to 300 people a year in the USA.

  5.         Necrotising fasciitis has killed at least 10 people in Britain this year and caused widespread panic.

  7.         British newspapers Wednesday printed gruesome photos of victims; headlines shouted "Killer Bug Ate My Face."

  9.         But the government says it has no evidence there is an epidemic under way.

  11.         In the USA, 500 to 1,000 people a year get the disease, says Robert Howard of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

  13.         Most are saved with antibiotics and surgery to remove dead and infected skin, muscle and fat.

  15.         The bacteria enter a body through a wound or sore and destroy flesh at a rate of up to an inch an hour, he says.

  17.         "It's an infection you can almost see progress."

  19.         Antibiotics work, but "it's tremendously important to get to a doctor quickly."

  21.         The disease is an uncommon complication of a common bacteria - Group A streptococcus.

  23.         It causes strep throat, but "certain strains are extremely virulent," Howard says.

  25.         In the USA, about 2,500 die annually of Group A strep, including Muppet creator Jim Henson.
