  8. ABOUT EMPIRE BUILDER 1.0 FONT: 
  9.     This font was inspired by the lettering used by the Great Northern  
  10. Railway on their passenger trains from the late 40's through the mid  
  11. 60's.  Looking at this typeface, it is hard to believe that it is at  
  12. least 50 years old.  The Great Northern Pictorial Volume 3, by John F.  
  13. Strauss, Jr., was a great source of photographs to work from. 
  14.     After loading up the True Type file, print out a copy of  
  15. "EB_MAP.DOC" for a quick overview of the font.  There are two special  
  16. keys that I have been having trouble translating over from the Mac, so I  
  17. decided not to document them in the "MAP" file, but I will mention them  
  18. here in case you feel like messing with them.  This may or may not work  
  19. for you, be warned that I got it to work on screen but not on the  
  20. printer: "<" = 1/4th space, ">" = 3/4th space.

  22. WHAT IS THAT TRAIN DOING ON THE "MAP" SHEET? 
  23. That is a sample from RailPassenger.  The true type hinting may mess  
  24. these characters up on some printers, but the post script version of  
  25. RailFreight works fine.  I wanted to put in a couple of toys for those  
  26. of you who don't have my whole font collection.

  31. IMPORTANT STUFF:

  33. SOME CHARACTERS MAY BE TOO DETAILED TO SHOW ON THE SCREEN and will  
  34. appear as empty boxes.  They should print okay though.

  36. DO NOT INSTALL THE POST SCRIPT and TRUE TYPE VERSIONS AT THE SAME TIME

  38. THE TRUE TYPE FONT MAY NOT WORK ON ALL SYSTEMS, THE POST SCRIPT FONT IS  
  39. PREFERED.

  42. ABOUT THE IBM VERSIONS: 
  43.     Yeah, I am a Mac head.  I am slowly learning all I can about the  
  44. IBM systems.  I am also enlisting the help of my IBM friends as  
  45. "consultants".  This might be a bumpy road at first, but these fonts are  
  46. pretty neat and they are worth the trek.  From my end, I am more than  
  47. willing to work with you to get the fonts to work on your machine.  On  
  48. your end, I ask for patience if they don't work on the first try.   
  49. Please let me know ASAP if you are having any problems.  I am willing to  
  50. do minor changes or generate bit map files for DOS users as much as my  
  51. time will permit.  Let me know what you want or need and we'll work  
  52. something out.

  54. HOW TO INSTALL THE TRAIN FONT ONTO YOUR SYSTEM: 
  55.     You will need Windows 3.1 or later for this True Type font. 
  56. 1) Double click on the Windows control panel to open it. 
  57. 2) Open the fonts panel 
  58. 3) Select Add 
  59. 4) Choose the drive from the list 
  60. 5) Choose the directory from the directory list 
  61. 6) Select the fonts you want to install from the list of fonts 
  62. 7) Select "OK" ton install

  65.     IF YOU HAVE TROUBLES installing this font or it doesn't seem to  
  66. print out correctly, PLEASE LET ME KNOW as soon as possible.  I can  
  67. either give you more specific instillation information or go and fix the  
  68. bug.  (e-mail is great for this, but snail mail works fine too)

  71. NOW FOR THE "ASKING FOR MONEY" BIT, AKA, THIS IS SHAREWARE: 
  72.     You are free to use (play with, throw at the cat, etc.) this font  
  73. for one week after receiving it.  If you like it and decide to keep it,  
  74. you should send a $10 "shareware" fee to myself, at the address below.  
  75. Please include a brief note describing where you got this font, what you 
  76. like about it, and what you would like to see added to it. 
  77.     If you just have to have the full collection of my train fonts, 
  78. send a FORMATTED 3.5" HD disk (they won't fit on an 800k disk any more) 
  79. and a SELF ADDRESSED STAMPED ENVELOPE to the address below. (I hate to 
  80. format disks and you will be sure to get the right machine, Mac or IBM, 
  81. this way) 
  82.     I do not want to send any of my customers into bankruptcy, if you  
  83. are honestly poor, (i.e., you ain't gonna support the American way and  
  84. my education) please send a post card (the weirder the better)

  90. -Each font or icon package is an individual product.  Thus, if you keep 
  91. Passenger Font and Freight Font, you should pay $20, not $10.

  93. -You may NOT use this font, EmpireBuilder Font, in any publication or 
  94. any product unless you register your copy of EmpireBuilder Font by 
  95. sending  
  96. $10 FOR EACH FONT YOU USE.  Be sure to specify which fonts you are 
  97. registering for.  It is not fair for you to make money off of my hard 
  98. work  
  99. without paying the Shareware fees.

  105. font or include it in any package for sale without the written

  115. WHY SHOULD YOU SEND IN THE SHAREWARE FEE? 
  116.     Well, I am releasing this font in it's entirety.  I put a lot of  
  117. hard work into this font.  I have also gotten a lot of pleasure from it.   
  118. Ignoring all of the capitalistic angles, your shareware dollar will  
  119. speed up the development of new train fonts and help me afford new font  
  120. tools.  My goal is to at least break even. 
  121.     Only 17 people have registered my shareware products since I first  
  122. released them six months ago.  There are a lot of expenses that go into  
  123. these fonts.  My font editor cost almost $300.  Then there are the  
  124. little expenses like ink cartridges (you wouldn't believe how many ink  
  125. cartridges I go through) and paying for a mail box.  Oy!  And you want  
  126. to talk about memory... 30 Meg of hard disk devoted to fonts and icon  
  127. development.

  130. BENEFITS OF PAYING THE SHAREWARE FEE: 
  131.     Enough of what shareware fees do for me, what will they do for  
  132. you!?  I will spend less time on school and more time on producing  
  133. shareware.  You will also be entitled to a peek into things to come.  If  
  134. you send a disk along with your payment, I will give the Demo font that  
  135. includes all of the odd characters that haven't quite found a home yet  
  136. (including a number of steam engines!).  In addition, I will rush you  
  137. out the most recent versions of my fonts and icons.

  163. cars, good for titles and page numbers.
