NORTON DESKTOP FOR WINDOWS
Loadtime and Exit Improvement Tips
Posted by Symantec, 10/25/91
We are, of course, working to improve load time for the next version, in the
meantime here are some things that might help:
1. Run Speed Disk (it's on the Emergency Disk). Put files with DLL and
EXE extensions at the beginning of the disk. Unfragmenting DLL's will make a
difference.
2. Only have as many items (open drive or group windows, or iconized
drive or group icons, tools and other items) open on the Desktop as you
really need. The more you have on the Desktop when you to to start Windows,
the longer it will take.
3. Several users have reported that the best impact on loadtime has
resulted from reconfiguring their cache program so that it maintains some
memory when Windows loads, for example:
SMARTDRV.SYS 2048 1024 or NCACHE /EXT=2048,1024
4. Some users prefer to disable Quick Access (this also makes more
Resources available), after making Buttons or Custom Menus for their
applications. (Configure/Preferences, then uncheck Load Quick Access on
Start, save your configuration and reload).
To reduce the time it takes to exit Windows, do the following:
1. Set-up the Desktop the way you will use it most often.
2. Go to Configure/Full Menus.
3. Go to Configure/Preferences. Make sure the check-box for"Save
Configuration on Exit" is off.
