INTRODUCTION
For Comic Books is a specialized database designed both
for use by people who have a few comics and for the
professional investor. For Comic Book Collectors allows you
to catalog a comic book library and then locate a book, or
groups of books, by any one of up to 21 criteria.
The three level feature of For Comic Book Collectors allows
you to determine the amount of information you want to store
for each book. If you have valuable books, or need complete
descriptions for investment or insurance reasons, you can
keep information to a level of very fine detail. On the
other hand, if you just need a quick way to find specific
books (or types of books) you may use the first, less
detailed, level of For Comic Book Collectors.
THE THREE LEVELS OF FOR COMIC BOOK COLLECTORS
The three levels of For Comic Book Collectors are: Collector,
Advanced Collector, and Professional. Each level provides
progressively a greater detail of information that can be
stored for each book.
+
The following is a list of the information that can be
entered at each level. As the higher levels are used,
however, the data files use more disk space. Using the
Collector level allows you to have twice as many entries on a
floppy disk as you can get at the Advanced Collector level.

The spaces for Note and Other plus the misc. lines provide
spaces for you to enter miscellaneous information that is
important to you. This could be the information about
the story, or your comments on the quality of the art, or
just your opinion of this book.
+
The following are descriptions of what I use each line for.
You are not limited to this information. You can enter
anything on any line and For Comic Book Collectors will still
be able to conduct correct searches and sorts. However, the
Value line should only be used for a value.
(Collector Level)
Title - The title of this specific book.
Writer - The name(s) of the writers.
Artist - The artist who did the art for this book.
Issue - The issue number.
Note - This line is provided for miscellaneous information.
You can enter an abbreviation for the type of book; or your
opinion of this book; or any other information you feel is
valuable.
Value - Enter the current value of the book. FCBC will then
be able to search and find all books whose value is greater
than the amount you enter.
(The Advanced Collector level)
Cost - Enter the amount you paid for this book. We may
develop a utiity in the future that will compare this number
with the current value and tell you how much your collection
has appreciated.
Condition - A conservative estimate of the condition of this
book. (Note: any estimation of condition is subject and may
be different for different people).
Other - Like the NOTE line you can enter whatever information
you feel is useful.
Publisher - Name of the publisher.
+
Cover Date - Date of publication.
Hero(s) - The name(s) of hero(s) - there can be more than one
on this line - that you wish to track.
Villain(s) - The name(s) of villain(s) - there can be more
than one on this line - you wish to track.
Appearance(s) - Names of characters from other books that
make an appearance in this book.
Cross Reference Title - Another book that you wish to cross
reference with this book.
(The Professional Librarian level)
All of the lines at this level are for miscellaneous
information.

INFORMATION ABOUT FILES
For Comic Book Collectors creates a separate file for each
level. A number is added to the end of the filename to
indicate the level it is associated with. If you are using
COMICS as your filename, then the software will create
COMICS.DA2 for the Advanced level and COMICS.DA3 for the
professional level.
The more levels used, the fewer entries can be stored in a
given space. The following chart provides a rough estimate
of the number of entries that can be put within a certain
space (360K is the space on a double sided, double density
floppy disk):
Indexed Indexed
360K 1 Megabyte 360K 1 Megabyte
Collector 2000 5800 750 2050
Advanced 875 2400 500 1350
Professional 450 1300 330 950
For Comic Book Collectors also needs to use a data file
called CMCBOOK.ALL. This file should always remain on the
same floppy, or in the same directory as the COMICS.EXE
program. This file is used to store the settings used by
COMICS.EXE.
In creating data files For Comic Book Collectors using the
following method:
The Collector level data file has an extension of .DAT
The Advanced level data file has an extension of .DA2
The Professional level data file has an extension of .DA3
+
The file holding the setting used for each filename has an
extension of .CMC.
If you are using the default filename of COMICS, then at
the Professional level the following files would be created.
COMICS.DAT - Collector level data
COMICS.DA2 - Advanced level data
COMICS.DA3 - Professional level data
COMICS.FRC - Setting for the COMICS files
In addition the indexing would create the following files:
COMICS01.NDX - Index of writers
COMICS02.NDX - Index of artists
COMICS03.NDX - Index of titles
