- A PAT PHRASE GOES SOMETHING LIKE THIS REFERRING TO THE BIBLE '
- THE OLD IS IN THE NEW REVEALED , THE NEW IS IN THE OLD CONCEALED ,
-
- IN so many ways the whole BIBLE is a JEWISH BOOK , all the
- writers but Mark were Jewish, Jesus is a Jew , and for the most
- part it was written to Jews or Jewish Christian believers, so it
- is very desirable if you wish to study some of the background to
- have a good understanding of the Old Testament and of Jewish
- culture to appreciate some of the finer points of the new
- testament.
-
- At the time of Christ's ministry and of the early Church the
- ONLY scriptures that the people had was the OLD TESTAMENT, in
- Hebrew and the first five books, (the TORAH) translated into
- greek. this was called the SEPTUIGENT, after the approximately 70
- scholars in Egypt who translated it. In addition to this, there
- was the oral traditions, which were later written into the
- MISHNAH, and numerous commentaries similar to those we have in
- christian bookstores, but from the perspectives of scholars in
- Orthdox Judaism. Notable among these are that of Gamaliel, Paul's
- tutor , and his grandfather Hillel.
-
- This, the OLD TESTAMENT , is what is referred to in ;
- LUKE 24;25-27 where Christ speaks "Oh fools , and slow of heart to
- believe all that the prophets have spoken ; ought not Christ to
- have suffered these things and to enter into his glory?" and
- beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in
- all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.
- 32 .....He opened unto us the Scriptures.
- 45 He opened their understanding , that they might understand
- the Scriptures (when he gave them the great commission).
-
- MATT 21;42
- LUKE 4;21
- JOHN 2;22
- JOHN 5;39
- 7;38
- 19;37
- ACTS 8;32--
- 17;2
- 11
- 18;24,28
- ROM 1;2
- 16;26
- 1COR 15;3,4
- 2 TIM 3;15
-
- Jesus , of course had a whole different perspective on how to
- understand the word of God. Each great scholar had a different
- in- terpretation of what was meant, This because the LORD himself
- had blinded their eyes and stopped their ears (ISA 6:9,10 :JER
- 5:21; JOHN 12:40) SO in trying to grasp the simple truth in the
- scriptures they confused themselves and would only resort to
- quoting the authority of some of the great rabbis who would in
- turn contradict each other. This to them was the solution, know
- all the answers of the rabbis , and use the ones that tickle your
- ears . No single Rabbi had the answer nor the authority to speak
- for God as the prophets did. This is why they were all astonished
- at the authority with which the deciples and Jesus spoke , saying"
- never a man spoke like this " or When they saw the boldness of
- Peter and John , and percieved that they were unlearned and
- ignorant men, they marvelled , and took knowledge that they had
- been with Jesus. He would have us understand ,though, and exhorts
- us to study . Moreover He gives us the HOLY SPIRIT to teach us .
- So we have a great deal to study in the Old Testament in order
- to see CHRIST in it ,
-
- IN O.T. manifestations called THEOPHANIES
- IN PROPHECIES
- IN TYPES , or word pictures,
-
-
- This last way is somewhat obscure , but I am sure you will be
- able to follow along as we look at Jesus in the feasts of The Lord
- and see how his redemption and other works are brought out in the
- scriptures.
-
- E THREE DIVISIONS BY SEASON F
- In Israel they did not celebrate Valentines , Easter etc.or for
- that matter any of the holidays as we know them, but the Lord
- commanded the Children of Israel:
-
- Ex 23;14-16 three times shalt thou keep a feast unto me in the
- year.
- Thou shalt keep the feast of unleavened bread ........
- the first fruits of thy labours
- .....and the feast of ingathering .
-
- E SEVEN FEASTS F
- Of these three times in the year there are actually seven
- specific feasts and we shall deal with each of these as we have
- time. They are set out in Lev 23 Deut 16 in the law and commented
- on in other passages.
-
- E LOOK FOR FOUR THINGS; F
- 1. The simple intent for Israel.a memorial as to what God has done
- for Israel
- 2. the fulfillment in Christ
- 3. the fulfillment in the Church
- 4. the fulfillment in our personal salvation

- EXODUS 12; 2 THIS MONTH SHALL be unto you the beginning of months:
- it shall be the first month of the year to you .
- In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them
- every man a lamb , according to the house of their fathers, a lamb
- for a n house:
-
- And if the household be too little for the lamb , let him
- and his neighbour next to his house take it according to the
- number of the souls; every man according to his eating shall make
- your count for the lamb.
- Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first
- year; ye shall take it out from the sheep or from the goats:
- And ye shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same
- month; and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall
- kill it in the evening.
-
- And ye shall take of the blood and strike on the two door
- posts , and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they
- shall eat it.
- And they shall eat the flesh there in that night roast
- with fire, and unleavened bread , and with bitter herbs shall they
- eat it.
- Eat not of it raw, nor sodden at all with water, but roast
- with fire; his head with his legs , and with the purtinence
- thereof.
- And ye shall let nothing remain of it until the morning;
- and that which remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn
- with fire.
- And thus shall ye eat it ; with your loins girded, your
- shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand, and ye shall eat
- it in haste: it is THE LORD'S PASSOVER.
- For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night , and will
- smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast;
- and against all the Gods of Egypt I will execute judgementL I AM
- the LORD
-
-
-
-
- And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where
- you are : and when I see the blood I will Pass over you, and the
- plague shall not be upon you to destroy you when I smite the land
- of Egypt
- And this day shall be unto you for a memorial ; and ye shall
- keep it a feast to the Lord throughout your generations ; ye shall
- keep it a feast by an ordinance forever.

-
- E EXODUS 12:8,15-17,20F
- E DEUT 16:3--8, F
-
- E HOW IT IS OBSERVED IN THE JEWISH HOUSEHOLD F
- the whole house is cleaned to be sure there is none left. In
- old times people would search thuought the house with candles
- or lamps to be sure that there was none left.
- At even the day before , the children go about with a candle
- and a feather and sweep up the few pieces left just for them
- onto a wooden' spoon from where they are placed a bag to burn.
-
- E WHAT IS MOTZA? F
- Motza is a thin biscuit ,prepared from parched grain. To be
- Kosher for passover ,it must not have gotten damp or have
- occasion to be mixed with other foods that might contain
- yeast.(leaven) it is therefore baked very quickly also, in
- order that no yeast naturally present in the grain would have
- a chance to grow and cause the lump to ferment, and therefore
- rise like our current sourdough bread, which is what they
- would normally have used day to day. In addition to yeast
- bread they would also have to clean their house of any grain
- product that was not deemed KASHER LEPESAH(clean for passover).
- This might include macarroni, sealed bags of flour, or
- anything that may have gotten damp enough to begin to ferment.
-
- Motza always has stripes of pierce marks on it, in rows like
- furrows. ISA 53 .....By his stripes we are healed
- PS 22;14 ...all my bones are out of joint
- 16 they pierced my hands and feet,
- 17 I can count all my bones
- The middle of three pieces on the passover table is broken
- The piece of this which is "hidden" is consumed with the forth
- cup of wine, this was the AFIKOMEN , of which Christ said,
- "this is my body which is broken for you"
-
- 15 SEVEN days shall ye eat unleavened bread; even the first day shall
- ye put away leaven out of your houses; for whosoever eateth
- leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day , that
- soul shall be cut off from Israel.
- 16 And in the first day a holy convocation , and in the seventh day
- there shall be a holy convocation to you ; no manner of work shall
- be done in them, save that which every man must eat, that only may
- be done of you .
- 17 And ye shall observe the feast of unleavened
- bread for in this selfsame day have I brought your armies out of
- the land of Egypt: Therefore ye shall observe this day in your
- generations by an ordinance for ever.

- :39 And they baked unleavened cakes of the dough which they
- brought fourth out of Egypt, for it was not leavened
- because they were thrust out of Egypt, and could not tarry
- neither had they prepared for themselves any victual.
- :43 And the LORD said unto Moses and Aaron, this is the

- JN 5;32-35 Verily, verily I say unto you, Moses gave you not that

- from heaven, For the Bread of GOD is He which cometh down
- from heaven, and giveth life unto the world. Then they said
- unto him; Lord ,ever more give us this bread.

- LEV 23;9-14 ............THE OMER offered with OIL
- Originally was thought of as simply the
- acknowledgement of the total provision of the Lord in providing
- grain , and a trust in the grace of God tp allow a bountiful
- harvest . God as Lord of the Harvest would first havve his table
- set with the best of the new grain , and then as servants the
- children of ISRAEL could eat later, having performed their duty
- to God.
-
- THe grain offering offered with leaven speaks of the holy spirit
- in the life of the sinful life of the participant, given as a
- total sacrifice to God , A fire offering was totally consumed.
- The libation speaks of the willingness to pour oneself out for God
