  3. It has been costing taxpayers $243,000 to water bureaucrats' office 
  4. plants.

  6. The Department of Energy gave an inventive, forward-looking genius in 
  7. Missouri $1,200 to design and build a solar heated outhouse.
  8.    
  9. The Law Enforcement Assistance Administration spent $27,000 to find 
  10. out why inmates want to escape from prison.
  11.    
  12. The National Science Foundation spent $84,000 to study "why people 
  13. fall in love."
  14.    
  15. The Smithsonian Institute spent $89,000 to publish a dictionary in the 
  16. Taotzil language, which is spoken by a small, obscure tribe in Mexico.

  18. The Federal Highway Administration wasted $220,000 of the taxpayers' 
  19. money on an idiot's questionnaire asking whether large trucks 
  20. contribute to traffic congestion.

  22. The Department of Labor spent $385,000 for a door-to-door census of 
  23. every dog, cat, and horse in Ventura County, California.

  25. The U .S.  Navy paid $110 each for diodes.  They normally cost four 
  26. cents.  Navy cargo ships are repaired at a cost reportedly fifty-eight 
  27. times greater than similar commercial vehicles.

  29. A $97,000 grant by the National Institute for Mental Health was spent 
  30. in part on the study of a Peruvian brothel.  The researchers vested 
  31. "three weeks of evening work" in making about twenty visits to a 
  32. "house of ill repute." They found, through "formal" and "informal" 
  33. interiews with prostitutes, that the brothel was a gathering place for 
  34. men.

  36. The Justice Department paid $734,371 to determine whether Playboy, 
  37. Penthouse, and Hustler magazines contribute to juvenile delinquency.

  39. The National Endowment for the Humanities granted $2,500 to Arlington 
  40. County, Virginia, to study why people are rude, cheat, and lie on 
  41. local tennis courts.

  43. Many people believe the only way to eliminate the deficit is by either 
  44. making serious cuts in important social and defense programs or by 
  45. enacting a massive income tax increase.
  46.    
  47. However, the Grace Commission has documented $24 billion waste over 
  48. three years--enough to eliminate the deficit without tax increases or 
  49. cuts in important domestic and defense spending.

  51. But powerful special interest groups who live off of the government 
  52. waste are fighting hard to block Grace Commission recommendations.
