  3.    Saved From Suicide

  5.    Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him...to deliver 
  6. their souls from death.  Psalm 33:18, 19
  7.  
  8.    The hymn "God Moves In a Mysterious Way" has been a source of great 
  9. comfort and blessing to many of God's people since William Cowper wrote 
  10. it in the 18th Century.  Yet few people know the unusual circumstances 
  11. that led to its composition.
  12.  
  13.    William Cowper was a Christian, but he had sunk to the depths of 
  14. despair. One foggy night he called for a horse- drawn carriage and 
  15. asked to be taken to the London Bridge on the Thames River.  He was so 
  16. overcome by depression that he intended to commit suicide.  But after 2 
  17. hours of driving through the mist,  Cowper's coachman reluctantly 
  18. confessed that he was lost.  Disgusted by the delay, Cowper left the 
  19. carriage to find London Bridge on foot.  After walking only a short 
  20. distance, though, he discovered that he was on his own doorstep. The 
  21. carriage had been going in circles.  Immediately he recognized the 
  22. restraining hand of God in it all.  Convicted by the Spirit, he 
  23. realized that the only way out of his troubles was to look to 
  24. God, not jump into the river. As he cast his burden on the Savior, his 
  25. heart was comforted.  With gratitude he sat down and penned these 
  26. reassuring words:"God moves in a mysterious way His wonders to perform; 
  27. He plants His footsteps on the sea, and rides upon the storm.  O 
  28. fearful saints, fresh courage take; the clouds you so much dread are  
  29. big with mercy, and shall break with blessing on your head."

  31.    The psalmist said, "...the eye of the Lord is on those who fear 
  32.    Him." Yes, our need is always His concern. -H.G.B.
