  3.  Welcome to mIRC v3.6, an IRC client for windows.
  4.  
  5.  This program is still under development and has not been
  6.  fully tested. It contains bugs. Use at your own risk. Read
  7.  the disclaimer!
  8.  
  9.  For those of you new to the internet, IRC stands for Internet
  10.  Relay Chat. The IRC network is a virtual meeting place where
  11.  people from all over the world can meet and talk.
  12.  
  13.  mIRC attempts to provide a user-friendly interface for use
  14.  with the IRC network.
  15.  
  16.  It has the following features:
  17.  
  18.   Coloured text to ease reading.
  19.   Uncluttered display.
  20.   Comprehensive Alias definitions.
  21.   Configurable multi-level popup menus.
  22.   DCC Send/Get/Chat/Resume.
  23.   Finger client.
  24.   Remote CTCP tool.
  25.   Simple Event handler.
  26.   Some basic fonts.
  27.   Ident server.
  28.   Simple File-server.
  29.   Command history.
  30.   Function Key definitions.
  31.   A handful of options.
  32.   Many other useful bits and pieces.

  34.  The various parts of this client have been designed with the aim of
  35.  simplifying and speeding an IRC session.
  36.  
  37.  This client implements only a subset of all IRC2 commands. It was
  38.  designed for users who do not require the sophistication of a full IRC2
  39.  client. That said, it does support, to various degrees, more than 50
  40.  commands, and also includes other mIRC-specific commands.
  41.  
  42.  This client does NOT support: scripts, and a large number of other things.

  44.  To be able to use mIRC, you need several things:
  45.  
  46.  1. Access to the internet.
  47.  2. Software for your machine that connects you to the internet.
  48.     mIRC requires a WINSOCK.DLL, of which several versions are
  49.     available. You will need this before you can use mIRC.

  52.  The latest version of mIRC can always be downloaded by ftp from:
  53.  
  54.     ftp.demon.co.uk   in   /pub/ibmpc/winsock/apps/mirc

  57.  How to Install mIRC:

  59.  This package should contain the following files:
  60.  
  61.  mIRC.exe               16-bit version
  62.  mIRC32.exe             32-bit version
  63.  mIRC.hlp               the helpfile
  64.  mIRC.ini               the optional ini file
  65.  readme.txt             this file
  66.  versions.txt           version history
  67.  
  68.  1. Place the mIRC.exe or mIRC32.exe and mIRC.hlp files together
  69.     in any directory.
  70.  
  71.  2. The mIRC.ini file should be copied to your WINDOWS directory.
  72.     It is not *necessary*, however it does provide important examples
  73.     on how to configure various aspects of mIRC, and I would urge you
  74.     to use it if this is the first time you are using mIRC.
  75.  
  76.  To use the 32-bit version you will need to have either Win32s installed
  77.  on your system or you must be using a 32-bit operating system.

  79.  Once you have installed mIRC, run it from windows, fill in the required
  80.  setup information, and connect to the IRC server.
