BUILDING ACTIVITY AND DWELLINGS
The housing and building statistics cover the construction scene from the
planning stage up to the completion of buildings. In addition to the monthly
building reports, data are supplied mainly by the monthly statistics on
building activity which provide data on building permits and completions of
buildings. Structural data of great detail are derived from the censuses of
buildings and housing (latest in 1987); they also serve as a basis for the
annual updating of the dwelling stock and provide the sampling frame for the
housing sample surveys (latest in 1978.)
[See Table 8.: Buildings]
COMMERCE, HOTEL AND RESTAURANT INDUSTRY, TOURISM
The system of statistics in the hotel and restaurant industry comprises
the censuses of distribution conducted at larger intervals (latest in 1985)
covering for all enterprises and establishments in particular turnover and
number of persons engaged, as well as monthly and annual sample surveys. The
data relating to tourism are derived from the accommodation statistics. The
statistics of the Berlin trade as well as the trade in goods with the GDR
are based on the evaluation of the waybills.
[See Table 9.: Wholesale Trade]
FOREIGN TRADE
Foreign trade statistics present the frontier-crossing trade in goods
between the Federal Republic of Germany and foreign countries. For this
purpose, the declarations submitted by importers and exporters are forwarded
by the customs authorities to the Federal Statistical Office for evaluation.
The presentation includes data on quantities and values of imports and exports
in a detailed breakdown.
[See Table 10.: Imports and Exports]
TRANSPORT AND COMMUNICATIONS
For the individual transport sectors, the presentation comprises data on
trafficways, means of transport and transport performance, and generally on
enterprises, persons engaged and turnover. Data on road traffic accidents are
compiled monthly on the basis of the relevant police reports.
[See Table 11.: Transport]
MONEY AND CREDIT, INSURANCE
The statistics on money and credit are predominantly compiled by the
Deutsche Bundesbank on the basis of the data provided by the credit
institutions. The index of share prices is computed at the Federal Statistical
Office. The competent authority for insurance statistics is the Federal
Insurance Supervisory Office.
[See Table 12.: Money and Credit]
JUSTICE
The statistics on the administration of justice provide information on
the activities of the courts and on the offenders. Data on the courts comprise
information on the staff and the number of cases. The annual criminal
statistics of the courts present data on convicted persons and the offences
committed in a breakdown by personal characteristics.
[See Table 13.: Courts]
EDUCATION
Data on pupils and teachers are collected within the scope of school
statistics from the headmasters of public and private schools. Figures on
apprentices and trainees are annually reported to official statistics by the
relevant professional chambers. Detailed data on students and university
teachers are made available for each term, or annually, by the university
statistics.
[See Table 14.: Education]
