The Economy of the Principality of Monaco
Contrary to an idea widely held abroad, the Principality of Monaco does
not "live on gambling" revenue from the concession of this monopoly accounts
for only 4.3% of the total income of the State.
Most of Monaco's revenue is derived from industrial, commercial and
tertiary activities broken down as follows:
[See Table 2.: Breakdown of State revenue (1985 estimates)]
Trade and Commercial Services
This field of activity accounts for 69.4% of the total turnover of the
Principality (15,700 million francs in 1985). This percentage is broken down
as follows:
[See Table 3.: Trade and Commercial Services]
Industries and Industrial Services
These include mainly processing industries in the area of Fontvieille and
the harbour (Quai Antoine Ier). This activity accounts for 28.5% of the total
turnover of the Principality (in 1985), broken down as follows:
[See Table 4.: Processing Industries]
Miscellaneous Services
These represent 2.1% of the total turnover of the Principality (1985)
they include:
[See Table 5.: Miscellaneous Services]
Of nearly 24,000 salaried employees working in the Principality (on
1.01.85), 81% are employed in the industrial and commercial sectors listed
above, 9% are civil servants, and 10% are employed by the Societe des Bains
de Mer. Furthermore, more than 14,000 salaried employees are non-residents
nearly 3,000 of them come from Italian frontier towns.
The privileged situation of the Principality has made it possible to
develop an activity which is now central to the economic life of Monaco:
tourism.
There are two kinds: leisure tourism and business tourism.
Leisure tourism
[See Street Map: Courtesy Embassy of Monaco, Washington DC.]
For the benefit of its visitors, the Principality offers ultra-modern and
comfortable hotel facilities (78% of hotel rooms are in the four-star de luxe
category).
Opportunities for relaxation, sport and entertainment are many and
varied.
(See the documents published by the Tourism and Congress Department of
the Principality).
Business Tourism
The recent development of business tourism has brought Monte Carlo into
the front rank of congress and convention towns. In particular, two centres
providing very advanced facilities have been built:
The Monte Carlo Convention Centre
and Auditorium (C.C.A.M.)
Bd Louis II, Monte-Carlo, Tel. 93 50 93 00
This is part of a superb complex of buildings fronting the sea, below the
famous Monte Carlo Casino. The C.C.A.M. is a hexagonal structure of bold
architectural design featuring an exhibition area of 1,800 square metres on
four levels, together with ultra-modern audio-visual and other technical
installations.
The International Conference Centre (C.R.I.)
12, Av. d'Ostende, Monte-Carlo, Tel. 93 50 34 44
The C.R.I. complements the above Centre it is located above Monaco
harbour, opposite the Prince's Palace. It has functional facilities for
congresses, conventions and seminars.
Other possibilities:
Le Sporting d'Hiver
c/o SBM, Place du Casino, Monte-Carlo, Tel. 93 30 99 31
The premises include several meeting rooms and exhibition rooms of
various sizes.
The Hotels of the Principality
Many hotels have rooms equipped for the convenience of congresses (Loews,
Hermitage, Hotel de Paris, Mirabeau, Beach Plaza, etc.).
Thanks to its knowledge and experience of business tourism, the Tourism
and Congress Department of the Principality is able to assure organizers of
congresses and seminars a personalized service guaranteeing the success of
their events.
