Glossary
apartheid-Literally, separation; originally an Afrikaans word that
applied to South Africa, referring to the doctrine that the different races
should be geographically and socially separated to the maximum feasible
extent. Has come to mean the structure of policy and law resulting in racial
segregation and white domination.
Asian-A person chiefly of Indian ethnic origin, although the term is also
applied to others of South and East Asian ancestry.
Bantustan-A South African sociopolitical experiment in government's
policy of separate development in which persons of common ethnic origin are
placed in national units and given the opportunity to develop as a
self-governing geographic entity.
bridewealth-Money, property, or services traditionally given to the
bride's family by, or in behalf of, a prospective husband as a mark of
respect and compensation for the family's loss of the girl.
Central African Federation-Refers to the Federation of Rhodesia and
Nyasaland, an economically oriented merger of Southern Rhodesia and the
British protectorates of Northern Rhodesia and Nyasaland that lasted from
1953 through 1963 in an effort to pool the region's resources and markets. In
1964 Northern Rhodesia became independent Zambia, and Nyasaland became
independent Malawi.
dambo-A small grassy floodplain; term is used mainly in central Africa.
European-Standard term applied to whites, regardless of their country of
origin.
extended family-A kin group consisting of two or more related nuclear
families (q.v.). For example, a man, his wife or wives, their unmarried
children, his married sons, their wives and children.
FRELIMO-Front for the Liberation of Mozambique; African nationalist
organization seeking independence and black majority rule for the
Portuguese territory.
FY-Fiscal year; in Malawi the period from April 1 through the following
March 31. FY 1974, for example, covers the period from April 1, 1973 through
March 31, 1974. Before April 1, 1970, when the fiscal year was adopted, the
Malawian financial year was synonymous with the calendar year.
GDP-Gross domestic product. The total value of productive activity
within the national borders, theoretically obtained by adding up the estimated
value added by each productive sector in the economy. The value added by each
producer is equivalent to actual or imputed wages, profits, and other incomes
payable for factor services. GDP differs from gross national product (GNP),
which excludes the value of net factor payments to nonresidents (interest,
profits, and salary remittances). Monetary GDP excludes the imputed value of
subsistence production.
GNP-Gross national product. See GDP.
kwacha-Malawian currency, adopted on February 15, 1971; one kwacha (K1)
consists of 100 tambala. From 1964 through January 1971 currency was the
Malawi pound, each consisting of twenty Malawi shillings and equivalent to
US$2.80 through 1966 and US$2.40 through January 1971. After decimalization,
K1 equaled US$1.20 from February 1971 to December 1971. After United States
dollar devaluation in December 1971, the average monthly rate of exchange was:
K1 equaled US$1.30; in 1972 K1 equaled US$1.17; in 1973 K1 equaled US$1.19.
lineage (patrilineage, matrilineage)-A group of people who can trace
their descent from a known common ancestor; a patrilineage if descent is
traced only through males, a matrilineage if descent is traced only through
females.
lobola-Traditional African brideprice, or bridewealth (q.v.).
MCP-Malawi Congress Party, the only political organization authorized by
the Republican Constitution of 1966; led by Life President H. Kamuzu Banda.
nuclear family-A kin group consisting of a man, his wife, and their
unmarried children.
polygyny-Practice of having two or more wives simultaneously; a man, his
wives, and their children constitute a polygynous family.
savanna-Tropical or subtropical grassland with scattered trees and
drought-resistant undergrowth.
UDI-Unilateral Declaration of Independence; refers to action of Prime
Minister Ian Smith of Southern Rhodesia on November 11, 1965, which was taken
on behalf of the British colony without the concurrence of Great Britain.
wattle and daub-A framework of woven poles and twigs covered and
plastered with mud and used in the construction of traditional African houses.
Wenela-Mines Labor Organization of South Africa; the name was originally
adopted by the organization's predecessor, the Witwatersrand Native Labor
Association.
World Bank Group-Consists of the International Bank for Reconstruction
and Development (IBRD) and its two financial affiliates, the International
Finance Corporation (IFC), which became operational in 1956, and the
International Development Association (IDA), which became operational in 1960.
IFC works specifically with the private sector in developing countries, and
IDA operates in the same sectors and with the same policies as the IBRD but
provides credits only to the poorer developing countries and on easier terms
than conventional IBRD loans.
