LESOTHO HIGHLANDS WATER PROJECT.
This is the largest economic project Lesotho has ever embarked upon and
it is one of the largest on-going projects in Africa.
The M 4 billion water harnessing project will take 30 years to complete
resulting in six huge dams ushering in a better way of living for Basotho
people through income from sale of water to the Republic of South Africa,
generation of electricity for Lesotho, irrigation facilities, fisheries and
increased tourist attraction for the country.
The agreement to launch the project was signed in October 1986 between
Lesotho and the Republic of South Africa which is going to be the sole buyer
of Lesotho's water.
Actual construction work started in September 1987 with the building of
access roads to the first Katse dam site at Bokong while the construction
work of the first dam is scheduled to start in 1990.
