THE SPECIAL TERRITORY OF JAKARTA
GOVERNOR: Wiyogo Atmodarminto
GEOGRAPHY: Area: 650.40 sq km. (including the Pulau Seribu group of
islands). Capital: Jakarta. Borders: Java Sea on the north, District of
Bogor on the south, District of Tangerang on the west, and District of Bekasi
on the east, all three districts belonging to the province of West Java.
Situated between 106 degrees 49'35" east longitude and 06 degrees 10'37" south
latitude. Rivers: Ciliwung, Malang, Angke, Cideng, Sunter, Kamal, Sodong,
Krukut, Sentiong, Buaran and Pasanggrahan. Climate: Hot, with an average
temperature of 27C. Humidity: 77% to 90%. Rainfall: 2,000 mm an average
during the whole year.
FLORA: The sawo kecik fruit, jack fruit and the cempedak jack fruit.
FAUNA: Cows, buffaloes, sheep, goats, pigs, chickens and ducks.
POPULATION: 9,104,786 (est. 1989). Density: 13,365 persons per sq km
(1985). Average growth: 3.93% (1980-1985).
ADMINISTRATION: Jakarta Raya is the capital of the Republic of Indonesia
with the status of a Province and Special Territory. There are no districts in
the Special Territory of Jakarta Raya. Jakarta Raya is divided into 5
administrative regions: East Jakarta, West Jakarta, North Jakarta, South
Jakarta and Central Jakarta, none of which has a legislative body. There are
30 sub-districts or Kecamatan, and 265 villages.
RELIGIOUS FOLLOWERS: Moslems (84.78%), Protestants (5.54%), Roman
Catholics (5.18%), Hindus (0.83%) and Buddhists (3.71%).
CULTURE AND TRADITION: The culture of Jakarta is a product of a blend of
cultures from Java, from outside the island of Java and from overseas..
Language: Jakarta dialect. Dances: Topeng, Samrah, Ondel-ondel (giant puppet
dance), Pencak Silat (martial art). Music: Gambang Kromong, Samroh, Rebana,
Rebana song performances, and Dongeng or story telling.
EDUCATION: 3,076 primary schools with 1,166,425 pupils and 41,298
teachers. 1,235 junior high schools with 465,566 students and 26,868 teachers.
851 senior high schools with 336,085 students and 24,838 teachers. 18 state
and private universities, 99 academies and higher learning institutions.
HEALTH: 65 public and special hospitals, 303 public health centers, 36
mobile health service units, 320 polyclinics, 382 mother and child welfare
clinics, 183 dental care units, 56 special clinics, 87 laboratories, 447
apothecaries, 2,020 general practitioners, 784 specialists, 1,131 dentists,
974 pharmacists, 1,043 midwives, 428 family planning clinics and 804,117
family planning acceptors.
ECONOMIC INDICATORS: Economic growth: 10.01%. Income per capita: Rp.
1,076,603. Value of exports: US$3,394,072,948. Value of imports:
US$7,086,247,774.
PRIMARY PRODUCTS: Agriculture - Food crops: Rice, corn, cassava, sweet
potatoes, peanut, vegetable and fruits. Livestock: Milch-cow, buffaloes,
goats, pigs, sheep and chickens. Fishery - Fish products: Sea-fish and
fresh-water fish. Industry: There are 27,089 units of industry.
TOURIST ATTRACTIONS: "Jaya Ancol" Recreation Park, "Taman Mini"
Beautiful Indonesia in Miniature Park, Ragunan Zoo, Cipete and Senayan orchids
gardens, Old Harbor of Sunda Kelapa, National Reawakening Building, Youth
Pledge Building, Independence Proclamation Building, Soekarno-Hatta Monument,
Inviolable Pancasila National Monument, Taman Ismail Marzuki Art Center,
Satria Mandala Museum, Ceramic Museum, Textile Museum, Puppet Museum and Stamp
Museum. Hotel facilities: 5 five-star hotels, 6 four-star hotels, 10
three-star hotels, 15 two-star hotels, 19 one-star hotels and 121
non-classified hotels.
COMMUNICATIONS: Total length of roads is 5,188 km. Inter-island Shipping
and International Seaports: Tanjung Priok Inter-island and fish harbor:
Sunda Kelapa (Pasar Ikan) and Kalibaru. Airports: Soekarno-Hatta and Halim
Perdanakusumah.
THE PROVINCE OF WEST JAVA

GEOGRAPHY: Area: 44,176.73 sq km. Capital: Bandung. Borders: Java Sea and
the Special Territory of Jakarta on the north, Indian Ocean on the south,
Sunda Strait on the west, and Province of Central Java on the east. Soil
composition: A blending of iron compound and alluvial clay as well as other
compounds. Rivers: Ciujung, Cidurian, Cipanten, Cipasuruan, Cibungur,
Cibaliung, Ciliwung, Cisadane, Cipurian, Cimanuk, Citanduy, Cimadur,
Cisangkuy, Citarus, etc. Mountains: Mt. Tangkuban Perahu, Mt. Gede, Mt.
Ceremai, Mt. Pangrango, Mt. Galunggung, Mt. Krakatau, Mt. Salak, Mt. Tampomas,
Mt. Papandayan, Mt. Guntur, etc. Lakes: Situ Bagendit, Situ Gede, Situ
Panjalu, Situ Pangalengan and several artificial lakes such as the huge dams
of "Jatiluhur", "Saguling", "Cirata", and the "Dharma" water reservoir,
Climate: The temperature varies between 9C and 26C. Rainfall: Averagely more
than 2,000 mm and 3,000 mm per year. Humidity: 75%-89%.
FLORA: Areca, betel, pandanus, herbs and the red archanger.
FAUNA: Rhinoceros, panther, tiger, wild buffalo, deer, bird species,
various species of monkeys, snakes, wild boar, and husbandry animals.
POPULATION: 33,769,422 (est. 1989) Density: 666 persons per sq km (1985).
Average growth: 2.35% (1980-1985).
ADMINISTRATION: The province of West Java is divided into 20 districts, 4
municipalities, 5 administrative towns, 439 sub-districts, and 7,051 villages.
RELIGIOUS FOLLOWERS: Moslems (97.92%), Protestants (0.84%), Roman
Catholics (0.67%), Hindus (0.11%), and Buddhists (0.46%).
CULTURE AND TRADITION: The family system of the Sundanese adopts both
matrilineal and patrilineal descent system. Language: Sundanese. Dances:
Lenong, Jaipongan, Reog, Ketuk Tilu, Debus, Kuda Lumping and Banjet. Music:
Angklung (bamboo musical instrument), Kecapi (string musical instrument),
suling (flute), Degung, and Calung.
EDUCATION: 32,577 primary schools with 6,043,938 pupils, and 199,388
teachers, 1,989 junior high schools with 827,559 students, and 43,760
teachers. 1,041 senior high schools with 440,372 students, and 31,361
teachers. 4 state universities (the Bogor Agricultural Institute, the Bandung
Institute of Technology, the Padjadjaran University, and the Institute of
Pedagogy with more than 38,032 students).
HEALTH: 711 public hospitals, 14 special hospitals, 711 public health
centers, 1,063 sub-public health centers, 353 mobile health service units,
1.096 polyclinics, 1,099 mother and child welfare clinics, 1,968 general
practitioners, 347 specialists, 505 dentists, 18,548 paramedical personnel,
1,011 family planning clinics, and 3,997,063 family planning acceptors.
ECONOMIC INDICATORS: Exports: Plywood, processed-wood, cacao, rubber,
textile, shoes, etc. Value of exports: US$312,311,956. Value of imports:
US$954,446,832.

Commercial crops: Coconut, clove, rubber, cacao, tea, oil palm, sugar-cane,
