Afro-Guyanese-Descendants of Africans imported as slaves to work on the
sugar plantations by the early colonists. Were emancipated in 1832.

Amerindian-Original inhabitants of Guyana.

BGLU-British Guiana Labour Union.
British Guiana East Indian Association-A colony-wide East Indian
political and cultural organization with chief headquarters in Georgetown.
CARIFTA-Caribbean Free Trade Area refers to an agreement made in
December 1965 between the governments of Guyana, Barbados, and Antigua to
promote regional economic integration.
Civil Service Association-An association of government employees with
bargaining privileges.
coatimundis-Long-nosed raccoon-like animal, native to Guyana.
creolization-The cultural ideology of the post-emancipation period
which stressed the acquiring of English cultural characteristics as criteria
for limited social mobility.
Devali-A Hindu feast day, included among the national holidays. It
means "Festival of Lights."
East Indian-A term referring to natives of Indian who were brought to
British Guiana to work on the sugar plantations after the abolition of
slavery.
GAWU-Guyana Agricultural Workers' Union, a political trade union
encouraged and supported by the members of the Peoples' Progressive Party.
