Turkish Colonisation A threat for Cyprus and its people

The character of the Cypriot territory occupied by the Turkish military
troops is changing and is being threatened because of the mass influx of
Turkish settlers from Anatolia within the framework of Ankara's diabolical
schemes. The continuing occupation and settlement of the northern part of
Cyprus reveal the Turkish intentions aiming at the gradual control and
annexation of part or the whole of the island to Turkey. The multitude of
settlers who flood occupied Cyprus transform it into hell, charge the Turkish
Cypriots themselves. In the long term Cyprus as a whole is threatened.
"In the place of our people who flee abroad to earn their living, people
come from Turkey under the name of 'labour force'. This labour force is turned
into a vote force for conservative, chauvinist directed politicians... We are
faced with the danger of becoming a minority in northern Cyprus... foreigners
in our own homeland".
The denunciation comes from the leader of the "Turkish Republican
Party", Ozker Ozgur, and was published in the Turkish newspaper Gunaydin
7 - 14.1.86, in a special supplement on occupied Cyprus. In this, the grave
concern of the Turkish Cypriots is expressed regarding the mass influx of
Turkish settlers from Anatolia at the same time that the pitiful situation
created by the Turkish military occupation and Denktash's "administration"
forces the Turkish Cypriots to emigrate.
The problem presents other aspects and it becomes all the more acute for
the Turkish Cypriots. For someone to understand its nature and real dimensions
he must place it within the context of the history of the island in
conjunction with Ankara's plans for control of Cyprus. For, the basic target
and victim of Turkish policy is the Cyprus Republic and the whole of the
Cypriot people.
The attitude of the Turkish Cypriots
The Turkish Cypriots feel that the policy of their leadership serves
neither their own interests nor those of Cyprus as a whole. The policy towards
the settlers, which is dictated by Ankara, threatens the existence of the
Turkish Cypriot community. The dangers are visible.
- The number of settlers is continuously increasing and at the same time
their political power, because they are provided with "Cypriot citizenship"
and political rights. The Turkish Cypriots themselves protest: "60,000 people
in a total population of 160,000 people is not a small number..."
- An even more disturbing factor is the political behaviour and the
mentality of the settlers. As the Turkish Cypriot leader of a political
party, Mr. Ozgur maintains above, the majority of settlers are reactionary and
hold extreme positions. They accuse the Turkish Cypriots of being "bastards"
and threaten to "send them back to the Greeks". Needless to say that their
vote goes to Denktash's conservative and chauvinist party.
- As a result, whereas the majority of the Turkish Cypriots are against
the policy of the Denktash regime, their will is debased with the favourable
votes of the settlers for the regime.
In this way Turkey controls and directs all that goes on in the area of
Cyprus occupied by the Turkish troops. It promotes its interests in stages,
with victims at the present stage, the Turkish Cypriots and thereon the whole
of Cyprus.
The Cyprus problem cannot be solved because apart from the military,
Turkey also exercises political control and the Turkish Cypriots who are
willing to come to terms with the Greek Cypriots are not allowed to decide
about their own future.
"Workers" or "Tourists" who never return
The first Turkish settlers began to arrive as "seasonal workers" right
after the Turkish invasion and occupation of 37% of Cypriot territory, in the
summer of 1974. And thus the few who had believed Ankara's pretexts regarding
a so-called "peaceful operation", "protection of Turkish Cypriots" and
"restoration of the constitutional order", finally realized what the truth
was: Behind the pretexts, the only incentive for the Turkish invasion and
occupation was the materialization of the long-term schemes of the Turkish
politico-military elite at the expense of Cyprus.
Since then the influx of settlers continues at a steady pace. From time
to time Turkish and Turkish Cypriot newspapers publish relevant articles
expressing at the same time the concern of the Turkish Cypriot community
about the dangers brought about by the situation. For example, Yeniduzen,
20.1.86, in a commentary wrote:
"...It has been made known that during the last few months about
3,000 illegal workers have been granted 'Cypriot citizenship'..."
The same paper gives data on the various categories of settlers.
In the first place one meets the big mass "a large number of uneducated
people who come from Turkey, flood northern Cyprus never to return".
This great mass includes Turkish "tourists", who, following their arrival
in occupied Cyprus remain on the island forever.
The third category includes the members of the Turkish occupation troops
who do not return to Turkey. The fact that they are discharged in Cyprus after
the completion of their service "encourages these people to remain and settle
in Cyprus", notes a Turkish newspaper.
The Turkish Cypriots are becoming a minority
The exact number of settlers is not known. The Turkish Cypriot leadership
presents them as part of the Turkish Cypriot population, granting them
"citizenship".
From the facts published in the press and the reports of Turkish Cypriot
"officials" it is possible to give an approximate estimate of the number of
settlers and the rate of their arrival in the part of Cyprus occupied by the
Turkish troops.
In January 1976 the number of settlers stood at 27,000 whereas in July of
the same year it reached 50,000. The majority of settlers had been despatched
by the Turkish Government whereas others arrived on their own initiative.
The Turkish newspaper Aydinlik 27.8., 1979 wrote:
"At this moment the number of settlers exceeds 50,000. The colonization
policy still continues and every day new Turkish mainland settlers are being
settled in the Turkish part of Cyprus (sic). If one takes into consideration
the fact that before the 1974 intervention the number of Turks living in
Cyprus was 120,000 then one can see the magnitude of the number of settlers.
It is evident that such a large number of settlers will open the way to major
changes in the demographic structure of Cyprus".
A document by a Turkish Cypriot "official" says that in October 1974 the
Turkish Cypriot population numbered 115,000 - 32,039 of whom were found
"outside the Turkish Cypriot autonomous zone". The Turkish Cypriot
newspapers Halkin Sesi and Zaman, 9.8.1977 state that "according to a report
by the Minister of Housing and Rehabilitation, Mr. Hakki Atun, during the
period 1984-86 houses have been given to 20,934 families or 83,650 persons".
From the above, the conclusion is drawn that houses were given to 32,000
Turkish Cypriots who were transported to the occupied areas as well as to
50,000 other persons whose origin is not defined.
Gradually the Turkish Cypriots are faced with a process which has as its
