MDI INTRODUCES SCSI EXPRESS 2.5 FOR NETWARE
ADVANCED STORAGE MANAGEMENT SOLUTION
WINTER PARK, FL, October 1, 1995 -- Micro Design International,
Inc. (MDI) introduces SCSI Express software version 2.5, for
NetWare, applying 2.0 breakthroughs through advanced storage
management features. SCSI Express has long since evolved from being
a device driver into a software solution that tackles technology
barriers and provides device and media management for mass storage
solutions. MDI offers new breakthroughs with the 2.5 release,
including an on-disk directory, advanced administrator setup
functions, ICON representation of applications and an improved GUI
interface.
SCSI Express 2.5 decreases the time involved in the setup and
access of applications by providing on-disk directory capability
and administrator setup of applications. SCSI Express stores
application directories on the hard disk, eliminating the need to
scan all directories and saving up to thirty minutes when initially
booting the system. This allows the scanning of directories for a
number of CDs in seconds. SCSI Express 2.5 offers a new network
administrator function that eliminates the need to setup
applications at each workstation. The systems administrator is now
capable of setting up applications for all or specified
workstations from the administrator's location. The application
launching data is kept on the server eliminating the requirement
for the administrator to execute setup routines at each user's
workstation.
SCSI Express 2.5 has simplified the interface by offering the
viewing of applications by icon representation as they appear in
Microsoft's Windows as well as an enhanced GUI. Users are simply
shown groups with icons representing applications whereas
previously each application was listed. The improved GUI design
provides an easy to use interface for straight forward access to
needed information. GUI improvements include added symbols, tool
tips and device tabs for information on a particular device, media
or volume.
SCSI Express 2.5 for NetWare offers an information accessible
solution. SCSI Express works with all Windows environments
including Windows 3.11, Windows 95, Windows NT and OS/2 Windows. In
addition, SCSI Express supports multiple name space for expanded
access including DOS, OS/2, Macintosh and NFS environments. CD-ROM
file systems supported include High Sierra, ISO 9660, Apple
Extensions, Rock Ridge Extensions (UNIX), and HFS (Macintosh's
Hierarchical File System).
SCSI Express 2.5 incorporates these new capabilities within its
already proven solution supporting CD-ROM, hard disk, jukebox,
multifunction, rewritable optical, and WORM devices. These storage
devices are presented as standard NetWare volumes, benefiting from
NetWare attributes including security, ease of access, cache,
connectivity, etc. The SCSI Express 2.0 release overcame server
volume limitations and client drive letter limitations by
associating multiple CD-ROMs as a single NetWare volume(s). This
release recently earned Network Computing magazine's prestigious
Editor's Choice award as best of breed software for networking CD-
ROMs.
Micro Design International, Inc. is a mass storage solutions
provider delivering hardware and software subsystems designed for
today's rapidly changing marketplace. MDI's storage solutions
include CD-ROM, DAT, hard disk, multifunction, rewritable optical,
WORM, and optical jukebox. SCSI Express is available for NetWare,
DOS, OS/2, Macintosh and most popular UNIX environments. MDI has
achieved its second year placement in Inc. magazine's list of one
of the fastest growing privately-held companies in the United
States.
