  18. -------------
  19. This software update is provided to enhance your existing Indeo(TM)
  20. Video drivers to the latest video technology for compressing, editing
  21. and playing back video on your Intel microprocessor-based desktop
  22. computer, using Microsoft's Video for Windows* Version 1.1. 
  23.  
  24. Indeo Video technology gives you the capability to capture and
  25. compress video in a single step using Intel's Smart Video Recorder,
  26. as well as, the ability to encode and/or decode (i.e. playback) video
  27. using only software on your PC.
  28.  
  29. Intel's Smart Video Recorder product works with camcorders, VCRs and
  30. laser disks to capture Indeo Video.  It immediately compresses NTSC
  31. or PAL format files at: 320x240 pixel resolution up to 15 frames per
  32. second (fps), 240x180 up to 24fps, and 160x120 up to 30fps.

  34. In addition, the built-in scalability of Indeo technology
  35. automatically adjusts the playback frame rate depending on your
  36. computer's performance capabilities.  This allows you to play Indeo
  37. video files on any Intel Pentium(TM) or Intel486(TM) processor-based
  38. computer.
  39.  
  40. This version of the Indeo Video R3.2 driver is an update to Indeo
  41. Video R3.1 and Video for Windows V1.1. It provides:
  42.    
  43.    * Improved visual quality.  There is significantly more foreground 
  44.      and background detail for most sequences, particularly at 15 fps 
  45.      with data rates of 135KB/sec or higher.
  46.    * Improved video playback performance at low data rates.
  47.    * Improved 16-bit image quality and playback performance.
  48.    * Improved audio playback at low data rates.
  49.    * Compression and decompression of images up to 640x480 size in
  50.      4-pixel increments.  Note: 640x480x10 video with a 240KB/sec transfer 
  51.      rate, has been measured to play back at close to 10 frames per second.
  52.    * Improved software encoder performance (2 to 5 sec/frame on a Pentium 
  53.      processor system).
  54.    * Faster initialization.

  56. Indeo Video Drivers:

  58. Indeo(TM) Video R3.2  -- V3.22.01.30 incorporates the new Indeo 
  59.              Video R3.2 software codec that produces
  60.              the highest quality video for software
  61.              playback on Intel microprocessor based
  62.              desktop computers.

  66.              codec.

  70.              It plays back files created with the older
  71.              R2.1 codec.

  74. System.ini Entries:
  75. -------------------
  76. The Setup program installs the Indeo video drivers along with the
  77. latest Video for Windows runtime.  It places the following entries in
  78. the system.ini file for the Indeo video drivers:

  86. Previously, the recommended system.ini entries looked as follows:
  87.

  89. VIDC.RT21=indeov.drv
  90. VIDC.YVU9=indeov.drv
  91. VIDC.IV31=indeov.drv
  92.  
  93. Indeov.drv was an "umbrella" driver that used a text file called
  94. indeo.ini to point to the various Indeo video drivers.  The indeo.ini
  95. file had the following entries:
  96.

  98. DRIVERS=IV31,RT21,YVU9
  99. [IV31]
  100. DEC=ir30.dll
  101. [RT21]
  102. DEC=ir21_r.dll
  103. [YVU9]
  104. DEC=ir21_r.dll

  106. Indeov.drv and indeo.ini are no longer used and may be deleted if desired.
  107. However, older applications, which install the Indeo video drivers, may still
  108. use indeov.drv and indeo.ini.  Since the name of the latest Indeo video driver
  109. has changed from ir30.dll to ir32.dll, this would prevent IV31 files from
  110. accessing the latest driver.  To avoid this problem, an exact copy of the
  111. latest ir32.dll file, named ir30.dll, is also installed by this setup program.
  112. It is hoped the ir30.dll file will not be used.  But if another setup program
  113. should change the system.ini entries to point to indeov.drv, then the correct
  114. driver will still be accessed through ir30.dll.  In the future, this precaution
  115. should not need to be taken.
  116.  
  117. Microsoft Setup Utility:
  118. ------------------------
  119. The Setup.exe used to install this update is a modified version of the Setup
  120. utility Microsoft provides to install the Video for Windows runtime.  It is
  121. possible to make further changes to this program.  The Microsoft Setup program
  122. used to come with V3.1 of the Windows SDK.  It is now available to registered
  123. users of Visual C++ by calling Microsoft Product Support.
  124.  
  125. Software Prerequisites:
  126. -----------------------

  130. Optimum System Requirements:                     
  131. ----------------------------
  132. For the highest image quality and playback, the following system 
  133. requirements are recommended:
  134.  
  135.    * Intel Pentium processor
  136.    * System RAM: 12+ MB
  137.    * PCI local bus graphics controller
  138.    * SCSI hard drive
  139.  
  140. For best frame rate performance, put the graphics card in 8-bit
  141. color mode.  For best image quality, put the graphics card in
  142. 24-bit color mode.     
  143.    
  144. Based on the application and the size of the video file, some
  145. performance tuning of your computer's resources may be required.

  147. Updates:
  148. --------
  149. As new Indeo video drivers are released, they will be available on  
  150. CompuServe INTELARCH and Intel's Application Support BBS at
  151. (916) 356-3600.

  153. This software update to Indeo Video R3.2 is a software codec change
  154. only.  There have been no changes to the Intel Smart Video Recorder Driver.

  165. Developers of AVI Editors:
  166. -------------------------------
  167. The following recommendation is for developers of AVI file editors.
  168.  
  169. To avoid unnecessary recompression, it is recommended the IV31 and
  170. IV32 video formats be treated as the same video format. This speeds
  171. up editing operations and improves video quality.  When a video editor
  172. saves an edited AVI file, the video formats of the source video frames
  173. are compared to the video format chosen for the target file.
  174. Typically, any frames not in the target format are recompressed.  If
  175. a clip contains a mixture of IV31 and IV32 frames, and the output
  176. format is IV32, it is not necessary to recompress the IV31 frames.
  177. The Indeo video R3.2 codec will play back both video formats.  
  178.  
  179. Known Operating Characteristics:
  180. --------------------------------
  181.  1) This version of Indeo video supports an active or dynamic
  182.     palette.  However, a future update to the VfW runtimes from
  183.     Microsoft is needed to use this feature. See item number 10
  184.     below for details on using Indeo video's fixed palette.
  185.  
  186.  2) The new Indeo Video R3.2 driver can play back AVI files
  187.     compressed using the older R3.0 and R3.1 drivers.  However, AVI
  188.     files created by the R3.2 software encoder cannot be played back
  189.     using the Indeo video R3.0 or R3.1 drivers.  Microsoft's Media
  190.     Player will report the error "Video not available, cannot find
  191.     'vids.iv32' decompressor."   
  192.  
  193.  3) The latest R2.1 driver does not display a setup dialog box from
  194.     the Control Panel.
  195.  
  196.  4) ActionMedia(R) II boards and RT Video boards can not be used
  197.     to provide hardware capture or accelerated playback of Indeo
  198.     Video R3.x files.  Intel is considering options to provide
  199.     these hardware drivers; however, there is no specific timeframe
  200.     to announce at this time.
  201.  
  202.  5) Frames are dropped when capturing 320x240 or 240x180 images
  203.     at frame rates greater than 15 or 24, respectively.  With
  204.     the current hardware and software technology, this is the
  205.     maximum frame rate that can be capt
