The Karoo sediments began with a massive
ice age about 300 million years ago, when most of
Southern Africa was covered by thick ice
sheets. Glacial deposits can be found in
Western and Eastern cape.
The Karoo Sediments are mostly river
derived and they are world famous for
their wealth of fossils.
Right on top of the Karoo Supergroup, there
occurred a huge outpouring of volcanic lava.
This ended all plant and Animal life in the Natal
Drakensberg and Lesotho.
