The Communications tool in Works lets you use a modem to communicate with other computer users, just like having a computer telephone conversation. The Communications tool lets you send and receive data to and from any other user who has a modem linked to their computer.
To open the Communications tool, you must first either start Works or select the \INew \icommand from the \BFile\b menu of any Works tool. This opens the \BWorks Task Launcher\b dialog box. Now simply click on the \ICommunications \ibutton.

When you create a new Communications file, Works displays the \BEasy Connect\b dialog box.
You use this dialog box to identify the computer that you want to connect to.
Type the telephone number of the modem that you want to connect to in the \IPhone number\i text box.
Enter a name in the \IName of service\i text box to help you identify this telephone number from others you may connect to using Works. You might type the name of the person or organization that you are connecting to.

If you have previously named a service, Works lists it in the list box at the bottom of the \BEasy Connect\b dialog box. To choose a service from this list, click the one you want.
Once you have identified the computer you are trying to contact, click on the \IOK\i button.

This opens the \BDial\b dialog box where you confirm your settings. You can now click on the \IDial\i button for Works to connect to the other (remote) computer.

When you successfully connect to another computer, it will display some kind of message on your screen. Often you have to respond in a given way to connect to the host system.

When you open an existing Communications file, Works opens the \BDial\b dialog box. You can now click on the \IDial\i button to connect in the same way as you did when you used this file before.

Sometimes the remote computer system does not respond to your commands once you connect. You can often make the other system respond by choosing the \IBreak\i command from the \BPhone\b menu.

You can use Works to receive a call from another computer user. To do this, start the Communications tool, close any dialog boxes that Works displays, and then choose the \IPhone\i command from the \BSettings\b menu. In the \IConnect option\i section of the dialog box, select the \IAuto answer\i radio button and then click on the \IOK\i button to receive the call.
When you save a Communications file, Works saves the current settings, including the telephone number you specified. However, saving a Communications file does not save any information that you received from or sent to the remote computer system.
As in the other tools in Works, you save your file by choosing the \ISave\i or \ISave As\i command from the \BFile\b menu or by clicking on the \ISave\i button on the toolbar.

Works does not automatically save the information that you receive during a communications session; you must save the information yourself.
To save the information that you receive, you must put it in another file, for example you could put the information in a Word Processor document. There are two ways of putting the information into a file that you can save. You can:
╖ Highlight the information on your screen, copy it, then paste it into another file; or
╖ Capture the information to an existing file.

When you receive information from a remote computer system, Works keeps the information in a temporary file that you can view on your screen in the Communications tool. You can receive up to 256,000 lines of information from the remote computer system. If the remote computer system sends more than this amount, Works discards the oldest text to make room.
When information fills your screen, the lines at the top of the document window scroll out of sight. To read information that has scrolled out of sight, select the \IPause\i command from the \BPhone\b menu. You are now free to scroll through the temporary document using the scroll bars and or the keys, as you do in the Word Processor tool. To resume receiving information, select the \IPause\i command again.
To save information from your screen, highlight the information you want to save, then select the \ICut\i or \ICopy\i command from the \BEdit\b menu. Now switch to the document in which you want to save the information, and select the \IPaste\i command.

You can select the contents of the entire temporary document by choosing the \ISelect All\i command from the \BEdit\b menu.

You can save the information that you receive from a remote computer system using the \ICapture Text\i command. This lets you capture the text directly to a file, and there is no limit on the number of lines you can receive.
To start capturing information, select the \ICapture Text\i command from the \BTools\b menu or click on the \ICapture Text\i button on the toolbar.

Works then opens the \BCapture Text\b dialog box where you name the new file in which Works will save the information. The default filename is \B\Icapture\b\i. Click on the \IOK\i button to start capturing text in the new file.

If the file in the \BCapture Text\b dialog box already exists, Works warns you with the message box shown.
To delete the existing file and replace it with the new text in a file of the same name, click the \IReplace\i button.
To add new text to the end of the existing file, click the \IAppend\i button.
To return to the the \BCapture Text\b dialog box to choose a different filename, drive, or directory, click the \ICancel\i button.
