PROGRAM: NEWCHK - Graphic Disk Space Representation
AUTHOR: Brian Meier
REGISTRATION: FREE
WHERE FOUND: Executive Computer Network
RESTRICTIONS: EGA or VGA
RATING: 8.0
VALUE: S (P)oor - (A)verage - (S)uper
What is a computer for? Some would say to play games. Some would say to
BBS. Some would even say to work with. Its funny, a computer is supposed
to save you time by processing information quicker than a human.
That's why small, trivial utilities are great! They quench a need that
fulfilling by hand would take too long.
NEWCHK is a tiny utility that graphically shows you the space on your hard
drive.
USE: By just typing NEWCHK and the drive you would like checked (NEWCHK
A:), you are presented with a column and a cylinder divided up in
different colors. The different colors represent the free and used
space on your drive.
The only problem with the graphic representation is labeling. The
column is labeled what is free and used, but the cylinder is not.
Instead of a legend, there is just a color block and a number after
it. A basic premise for any visual aid is if facts could speak for
themselves you wouldn't need the visual aid.
You are also shown the current time and date, as well as, how much
total space is on your disk. Oh, and as a special bonus when you hit
escape to exit the program tells you how long you were using it.
Options are slim seeing that only two are available. You can have the
program work on a monochrome system, and have the program wait before
scanning the drive.
The monochrome capability was very nice. The legend for the cylinder
was easier to understand, for the program used different line
combinations, rather than color, to denote free and used space. The
wait command was also very well done. The program prompts you to enter
a disk then hit a key.

NEWCHK is just missing some features that you would expect. A timed exit
for autoexec files, color selection, and multiple disk checks from one
command line. The program was impressive with the few options it offered,
though.
