SHAREWARE REVIEW
PROGRAM: CDTO - Change Directory When a Given File is Found
AUTHOR: Ward Christensen
REGISTRATION: Assumed Public Domain
WHERE FOUND: Sound of Music (516) 536-5630
RESTRICTIONS: None
RATING: 9.5
In the beginning, the ShareWare wars were between terminal programs. As
users started select what they wanted, the war switched to DOS Shells.
Users, stunned by the immense numbers of shells, slowly adopted a few. This
made the ShareWare market susceptible to the latest wars: Find the File
Programs.
Find the File Programs are like Norton's FF command. There are unique
benefits to some, like the ability to look into compressed files or delete
the files once they have been found, but basically they all perform the
same task.
One of the problems I have with programs of this type is the space/value
ratio they possess. Meaning that if it takes up 20K I better get 20K worth
of value. I mean, geesh, my terminal program is only 20K, and I get a heck
of a lot more use from it than I do a file find program. With this in mind
I usually delete any file find programs I come into contact with. Well,
almost all.
CDTO is a program that not only tracks down a program for you, it will also
change to that directory, thereby eliminating a few extraneous steps.
USE: Written by Ward Christensen, who I am probably wrongly crediting for
creating XMODEM, CDTO is a soundly written, compact (574 byte) program
that hunts down files for you, then changes to that directory.
You trickster. No, multiple finds will not trip CDTO up. If it does
encounter a filename that is in more than one directory, it will ask
you which one you would like.
I can't believe you! Of course wildcards are handled. Typing CDTO *.ZIP
lets you change to the directories you keep your ZIPs in.
Uh huh. Uh huh. So you need this program? Not so fast. There is a
slight problem. Let's say you type CDTO *.ARC from the ZIP directory,
but the program doesn't find any ARCs, it will place you in the root
directory not the ZIPs (original directory).

CDTO would have attained a perfect 10 had there been better documentation,
and more anticipated user mistakes. The teeny size, and the lightning speed
allow CDTO to be a winner
