ALL CONTENTS COPYRIGHTED (c) 1988 BY TRACY E. CARMAN
and THE RESPECTIVE RECORD COMPANIES. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED
This is issue number one of TC's CD review. This frequent review of Compact
Discs will attempt to be informational about the quality of CD releases. CDs
are a relatively new medium, and SOME companies rushed to "crank out" their
product on CD. This doesn't mean the quality is necessarily bad... but in
some cases, they aren't so great. This review will go through several CDs per
release, and hopefully give you an insight on the products. All opinions
expressed are MY opinions, and obviously don't necessarily express the
opinions of the manufacturer [grin].
Releases of this review will be released (hopefully) on a regular basis, in
accordance with my work schedule. I do NOT claim to be a music nor CD expert,
but have been around radio stations since the age of eight... both as an
interested listener, and in later years as an announcer. Additionally, I
started collecting records at age eight also (in 1968) and have tried to keep
up with modern music. I come from a Top 40 background, so these reviews will
most likely reflect that. I will hardly be reviewing a classical piece, nor a
opera or country piece, as I have little, if any background, in those areas.
This review is intended to be informational, but not necessarily critical. I
will review just released CDs as well as older ones. In some cases, in all
fairness I may review and/or refer to vinyl releases also. However, this is
not the overall intent.
The naming convention used on the CD reviews are and shall continue to be
simple. This file "CD-TC001.ARC" contains issue number one of the reviews,
and "CD-TC002.ARC.. 003.. et. al." will contain volumes two, three, and so-on.
Any comments, criticisms, et. al. may be directed to me via my bulletin board
(^Top Cat^) outside of Springfield, MA. The board IS a subscription board,
but the latest version(s) of the CD review will ALWAYS be available for
downloading without subscribing. The board operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week at (413) 567 1822... currently 3/12/24/9600 baud via USRobotics HST 9600.

a week on CIS.

Various Artists:
"Nipper's Greatest Hits - The 50's Volume 1" RCA/BMG #8466-2-R
"Nipper's Greatest Hits - The 50's Volume 2" RCA/BMG #8467-2-R
"Nipper's Greatest Hits - The 60's Volume 1" RCA/BMG #8674-2-R
"Nipper's Greatest Hits - The 60's Volume 2" RCA/BMG #8475-2-R
"Nipper's Greatest Hits - The 70's" RCA/BMG #8476-2-R
RCA/BMG has released five CDs of Nipper's Greatest Hits. Nipper, for those of
you who don't know, is the RCA dog always pictured in front of the victrola,
listening to "his masters voice."
Each CD contains extensive liner notes about each of the selections included
detailing the history of the song's artist, the song's chart ranking and other
pertinent information. Additionally, the CD notes which selections are stereo
and which are monaural. For those like me who hunted around for years to find
a stereo copy of "I will follow him" by Little Peggy March of good quality,
this is important.
The CDs each contain 20 titles, which are mostly top chart titles from the RCA
archives. The quality of the selections is overall excellent. On Volume 1 of
the 1950's, for example, other than the style of music, you would never
realize that the selections were recorded between thirty and forty years ago.
Eartha Kitt's "C'est Si Bon (It's So Good)" recorded in March 1953 sounds good
enough to have been recorded last week. For trivia buffs, Kitt was one of the
actresses who portrayed "Catwoman" on the Batman television series.
Nipper's Greatest Hits - The 70's contains the long version of "Miracles" by
Jefferson Starship. This record was previously only available full length on
the original LP "Red Octopus" with the edited single version on Jefferson
Starship's Greatest Hits compilation. It's nice that RCA has provided it here
for those who don't want to purchase the Octopus LP for only one song (which I
did).
Overall, this RCA compilation is of excellent quality, and includes hits from
"one hit wonders" as well as multi-hit artists. Full selection listings are
provided at the end of this publication for your reference.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DION: His Best LAURIE/3C 3CD 103
Classic Old & Gold, Vol. 4
Continental Communications Corporation (3C) and Laurie Records have teamed up
to put out a 20 title set containing Dion's greatest hits. The compilation is
Digitally Remastered from the original tapes, and in stereo (with the
exception of "Love came to me"). Liner notes are nonexistent to the point
where the song lengths aren't listed anywhere. In fact, not much other than
the song titles and publishers are listed.
The quality of the selections included is excellent. Unfortunately, the CD is
incomplete in titles. Arista put out a two record set of Dion's Greatest Hits
which I found to be more complete. This CD compilation doesn't include the
titles from the Columbia years (Donna, The Prima Donna; Ruby, Baby; et. al.).
Also, Dion's last major top 40 hit, "Abraham, Martin and John" is also not
included (even though it was originally on the Laurie label.
If you are a Dion fan, you won't be disappointed by the quality of the
selections, just the quantity. The selections included are listed at the end
of this publication.

SPANKY AND OUR GANG: Spanky's Greatest Hit(s) MERCURY 832 584-2
When Spanky and Our Gang's greatest hits was originally issued back in the
late sixties, early seventies, I faithfully ran out and purchased it. That
was obviously at least fifteen years ago, and I'm not embarrassed to say that
the vinyl has turned grey from the number of plays it got from me over the
year. The harmonies sound as fresh and alive to me today as they did when
they got their first spin on my turntable all those years ago.
Alas, Rhino came out with a new compilation of Spanky and Our Gang's greatest
hits, containing the majority of material on my old faithful Mercury release.
However, I was both pleased and displeased by the release. While it gave me a
chance to get a clean copy of my favorites, I found the mixes different. The
originally controversial "Give A Damn" was mixed out differently then the
Mercury release, but I was contented to have the material without clicks and
pops.
Probably seeing the success of the Rhino reissue, Mercury reissued the
original Spanky's Greatest Hit(s) on a CD only release, which became the
first CD I purchased. Once your committed to vinyl... you're committed. Boy
was I wrong! In came the CD player, and here's a publication created to help
others down the non-vinyl trail.
Getting back on the review trail, I was pleased to see the reissue of the
original LP on CD and thought it would basically be my old faithful Mercury
release on CD. Again, I was wrong. While the quality if phenomenal, the
mixes were again different than the original LP version. "Give A Damn" no
longer had the giant guitar pluck at the beginning, as it did on the Greatest
Hit(s) LP, and "Lazy Day" no longer had voices saying "hello" panning across
my speakers in the appropriate verse. In all fairness, I will note that the
voices saying "hello" didn't exist in the original LP "Lazy Day" was pulled
from.
Included on the Mercury CD compilation IS the original long version/outakes of
"Sunday Morning," along with my favorite, "Like To Get To Know You." Overall,
I would rate this compilation as excellent in sound quality. I have my
personal problems with the release, as you have noticed, but for those not as
picky as me, you will find it to be a pleasurable experience to close your
eyes and dive into the multi-harmonies of Elaine "Spanky" McFarlane and her
gang.
The complete list of cuts appearing on this CD appears at the end of this
publication.

Various Artists:
"45's ON CD, Volume 1 ('56-'59)" MERCURY 832 041-2
"45's ON CD, Volume 2 ('60-'66)" MERCURY 816 555-2
"45's ON CD, Volume 3 ('66-'69)" MERCURY 834 216-2
One day back in the seventies, I was hunting for records at a closeout type of
store, and came upon a monaural copy of Keith's 98.6 LP. Presuming it would
be the last time I'd ever see it anywhere other than on a lousy quality
styrine single ((Back the truck of used plastic toys, and lets recycle them
into 45s)), I picked it up for the obscene price of sixty-five cents. I got
the record home, and despite being labeled mono on the LP also, I found it to
be in glorous stereo. Well, now you can experience the full effect of the
stereo included in this compilation. With the piano and horns seperated, and
the quiet Token's backgrounds harmonizing in the speakers, this reissue of
Keith sounds great on CD.
The folks from Polygram/Mercury have done a pretty good job of compiling the
original masters of hits spanning a thirteen year period. A lot of the titles
included are hard-to-find singles from one hit and minor follow up hit
wonders. Keith is one example, as is Steam's number one hit, "Na Na Hey Hey
Kiss Him Goodbye." Also, the liner notes are excellent, including chart
details and artist biographies on each title, along with original artwork from
many of the original LPs the cuts were pulled from.
The overall quality of the titles is excellent, with only a couple of minor
critisisms. "The Rain, The Park and Other Things" by the Cowsills is in
monaural, with liner notes showing that it is available in stereo on their
again available greatest hits compilation. Don't you think they would include
it in stereo here too!? Also, I would love to hear "Love Is All Around" by
The Troggs in true stereo. The original LP was electronically rechanneled,
and the cut included here is monaural. I know it IS available in stereo, as I
have heard it that way on Dick Bartley's syndicated program. Okay... If you
didn't get it from Polygram/Mercury, Dick, where did you get it from??
Lastly, Some of the records have a tendency to fade out a lot quicker than
their original issues. Sure, you only lose maybe three to four seconds of a
song, but they should include the full-length version, in my opinion. "I Will
Always Think About You" by The New Colony Six is a good example. So, we'll
hear a little tape hiss at the end of a song. So what! That's the way the
original master was!! Include it instead of fading it out so we have nothing!!
I would highly recommend the acquisition of this CD set for your collection.
The titles included cover titles from the Mercury, MGM, Smash, Philips, Verve
and Fontana libraries you would be hard pressed to find in good quality and in
most cases, STEREO, anywhere else. I have included the selection list for
each of the CDs in the set at the end of this publication for your reference
and review.
