- MURPHY04.TXT
- This file of wisdom and aphorisms is intended to be driven by the MURPHY II
- program which I placed into the public domain in 1986. The original text
- files were intended for programmers, engineers and scientists and were
- not really built with the general public in mind. MURPHY is now
- installed on many corporate Local Area Networks and is being used by
- everyone from secretaries to Chief Executive Officers. The original MURPHY
- file is (a) unsuitable and (b) small enough that everyone has seen all of
- the laws by now. This file should fix both problems.
-
- This is "Lyall's Semi-Familiar Quotations" and is enough to make Bartlett
- go pear shaped. The file is roughly organized in alphabetical order by
- author to make it easier to eliminate duplications. Some still remain.
- Normally, I selected an entry only if I found it in more than one source
- and, where translations varied, I selected the one that appealed to me best.
- I have used about a dozen books of quotations plus a notebook in which I
- have jotted down unusual observations from just about everywhere. The only
- major overlap between this file and the original file is the quotations
- from Bob Edwards which are, however, substantially enlarged in this file.
- The file is intended for thinking people--there are no four letter words
- but I have quoted many people I do not agree with including Lenin and Hitler
- because the quotations will make you think. Thus, the quotes do not
- necessarily reflect my viewpoint and, if you have a sacred cow, it's
- probably reduced to ground beef at least once in this file.
-
- Bob Edwards and Richard J. Needham were Canadian journalists who
- wrote about the human condition with both wit and wisdom. Edwards created
- "The Calgary Eye Opener" in the first quarter of the century while
- Needham was a columnist in the Toronto "Globe and Mail" until he retired
- in the mid 1980s.

- The program to drive this file and other data files are available from:
-
- Charles J.C. Lyall

- Canada, T0B 2M0
- CompuServe 70674,313

- Send a 5.25 inch or 3.5 inch disk in a reuseable mailer to me at the above
- address. Canadians should enclose return postage. Our American cousins
- are asked to enclose two dollars (my bank takes US currency) to cover the
- return postage; don't send stamps...the Canadian postal system does not
- accept US stamps. Requests from outside North America should be accompanied
- by a reasonable estimate of the return postage.
-
- The MURPHY program will not drive this file as it stands. There are two
- ways to make it do it:
- - rename the file MURPHY00.TXT and put the file in one of the
- directories listed by the DOS "PATH" command.
-
- Example: RENAME MURPHY04.TXT MURPHY00.TXT
-
- - use the DOS "SET" command to define "MURPATH" as the full path
- name of the file.
-
- Example: SET MURPATH=C:\MURPHY04.TXT
-
- If your MURPHY program runs without any external files, then you have the
- old version; you will need the new version to drive this file. The new
- version of MURPHY.EXE is about 11,300 bytes long. The original version
- is considerably longer.
-
- I am very grateful to the many people who have supplied me with additional
- laws, aphorisms and observations of the human condition. This file
- is an indication that their efforts were not in vain.
-
- As always, contributions and corrections will be appreciated.
