- Many gas welders do not realize
- that metals other than steel can
- be welded with oxy-acetylene
- equipment. Welding brass is
- easy. It is just like welding
- steel, but happens at a lower
- temperature.
- Since brass is more sensitive
- to oxygen in the air, brazing
- flux is pasted onto the work
- and the welding rod first. When
- heated, this flux makes a smoke
- that fills the air and keeps
- the oxygen away.
- Most brazing rods melt at a
- slightly lower temperature than
- most brass alloys. You can weld
- or braze brass with ordinary
- brazing rods.

- Brazing cast iron is possible,
- but difficult. When you heat it,
- the affected area tries to ex-
- pand, causing cracks because
- cast iron is not very flexible.
- The way to handle this problem
- is slowly heat the whole piece
- in an oven. After brazing, cool
- it the same way or bury it in
- clean sand.
