  19.                              AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY

  21.         Commander  Ron Van Hoose served in the U.S. Navy as  an  In-
  22.         strumentalist,  Band  Leader,  Associate  Conductor  of  the 
  23.         United  States  Navy Band in Washington, D.C. and  prior  to 
  24.         retiring in 1980, he served for five years as the Commanding 
  25.         Officer  of  the  Armed Forces School of  Music  in  Norfolk 
  26.         Virginia.  He was responsible for the training of all  Army, 
  27.         Navy  and Marine Corps musicians and bandmasters  worldwide. 
  28.         He holds degrees in Music and Business Administration.
  29.         
  30.         In  1960,  he was the leader of the Navy Band  in  Argentia, 
  31.         Newfoundland.  No piano tuners were available locally so  he 
  32.         took a correspondence course in tuning to keep the pianos on 
  33.         base working for performances.

  35.         He continued studying and tuning, first as a hobby and  then 
  36.         as a part time job.

  38.         Along  the way, he tuned for Bob Hope, Jane  Mansfield,  Doc 
  39.         Severinson  (tonight  show), Vaughn  Monroe,  Anita  Bryant, 
  40.         Dorothy  Provine,  Les Brown and hundreds  of  lessor  known 
  41.         performers.

  43.         When  he left the Navy, he decided to continue in this  very 
  44.         lucrative profession on a full time basis.

  48.                     HOW LUCRATIVE IS THE TUNING BUSINESS?
  49.         
  50.         Before I began writing and teaching, I was tuning 3-4 pianos 
  51.         daily.   The  average rate for tuning in Virginia  Beach  is 
  52.         $45.00  (1991).  This equals an average income of over  $700 
  53.         per week.
  54.         
  55.         After  expenses for advertising, travel, taxes  etc...  that 
  56.         leaves a net of around $500 in real spendable bucks.

  68.         You probably won't get rich as a tuner, but even if you only 
  69.         tune  part-time while continuing your full time job,  $45.00 
  70.         for an hour and a half of your time surely can help  replace 
  71.         those  hamburgers  with steaks.  Of course, if you  go  full 
  72.         time and work some week-ends and evenings, you could  easily 
  73.         CLEAR over $700.00 a week.

  75.         If  these figures seem high, just get out the yellow  pages, 
  76.         call a tuner and ask him/her how much they charge.  You will 
  77.         quickly be convinced.

  79.         One  great  feature about this profession is that  when  you 
  80.         tune  for a customer, and do a good job, you will be  tuning 
  81.         for  them from then on.  Since pianos should be tuned  every 
  82.         six  months,  in a very short time you will have  more  work 
  83.         than  you can handle.  What do you do then?  You  train  and 
  84.         hire  additional  tuners.   Your $700 per  week  can  easily 
  85.         explode into $.????.

  88.         ready to grab your piano and make it sing?  Even if I didn't

  92.         old and honored profession (and how we make it pay).
