- Project # 74 LAY A BRICK SIDEWALK
-
- The warm welcoming appearance of bricks makes the addition of a brick
- walkway to your house a lasting investment. This is a project well suited for
- the average homeowner because excavating and laying bricks is more time
- consuming than difficult.
-
- A mason will charge about $1300 to excavate and lay a 3-foot wide by 40
- foot long walkway that is roughly 120 sq. ft. This includes excavation,
- spreading a sand base and laying the bricks.
-
- The cost of bricks varies widely according to the type you choose. Figure
- it will cost you at least $350 for common brick and sand. (Have both
- delivered because they're too heavy to transport.) Have these items and tools
- on hand: a ball of string and stakes for lay out, wheelbarrow, shovels, push
- broom, water hose, basic carpentry tools and a level.
-
- Back-breaking, muscle-stretching labor is what this job requires but the
- reward is a whopping 70% savings. By the time you put in the 45 hours to
- complete the walkway, you will have moved tons of material and handled
- hundreds of brick.
