  4. Install  3-speed rear  wheels just
  5. like  coaster  brake  wheels. Many
  6. have  a "non-turn"  washer on  the
  7. axle that sticks  into the slot of
  8. the  frame to  keep the  axle from
  9. rotating. Avoid squishing it.

  11.    STURMEY-ARCHER 3-SPEED HUB:
  12. Hold  the shifter  exactly between
  13. 3rd and 2nd gear. Turn the connec-
  14. tion  between  the  cable  and the
  15. little  chain until  you can  turn
  16. the pedals forward without turning
  17. the   rear    wheel.   When   this
  18. "neutral" is  directly between 3rd
  19. and   2nd,   the   adjustment   is
  20. correct.  Tighten the little knur-
  21. led nut on the indicator chain.

  25.         SHIMANO  3-SPEED HUB:
  26. Screw the lever  assembly onto the
  27. axle  approximately  7  turns. Put
  28. the  shifter  into  2nd  gear  and
  29. connect  the  cable  to  the lever
  30. assembly.  Turn   this  connection
  31. until the  line and circle  on the
  32. lever itself aligns  with the slot
  33. in the lever housing.

  35.           All 3-SPEEDS
  36. If  the  cable  seems  too long or
  37. short,  reposition the  cable stop
  38. band on  the bike frame.  If there
  39. is a  small pulley, make  sure the
  40. cable is in it's groove.
  41.     if  the  adjustment  'floats,'
  42. the cable  may be rusty  or kinked
  43. and should be replaced.
