  5.     We know that images can hold history in place. We forget
  6. sometimes that they can also drive it forward. In 1992 Los
  7. Angeles exploded over the meaning of pictures of a black man
  8. being beaten by white police. And it was pictures -- of spectral
  9. women and withered children -- that launched the rescue mission
  10. in Somalia. It may have been awkward to have cameras meet the
  11. troops when they landed, but wasn't it also appropriate? In a
  12. sense it was cameras that had sent them there.

  14.     This was a year that disproved the truism that scenes of
  15. tragedy all blur together, that photographs of famine in Biafra
  16. and Ethiopia, Sudan and then Somalia just pile on in layers,
  17. forming a callous around the conscience. Brought face to face
  18. one more time with starvation, the world did not just shrug. And
  19. pictures gave other conflicts their own unforgettable faces.
  20. Some of the video-game visuals from last year's fighting in the
  21. Persian Gulf were strangely antiseptic, an invitation to forget
  22. that war is the mass production of individual suffering. The
  23. photographs from Bosnia-Herzegovina, where war has become serial
  24. killing under the guise of politics, made us remember.

  26.     Images are an imperfect route to knowledge. They crowd the
  27. senses; they can simplify; they can yell. But they make an
  28. impact that sets in motion the deeper operations of judgment.
  29. The secular faith of the 20th century insists that history is
  30. progress, that time's arrow points the human race towards an
  31. ever brighter future. Then the world dissolves again into tribal
  32. bloodletting, and we wonder whether history is cyclical, always
  33. orbiting through the same thickets of hope and misfortune. When
  34. we look at news photographs, we bring to them the questions that
  35. history forces upon us: What should we think of human affairs?
  36. What is to be done? Pictures don't tell us the answers. They
  37. tell us why the questions are important.
