  6.     It was the perfect opportunity, urged President Carlos Andres
  7. Perez, for his countrymen "definitely and totally" to repudiate
  8. the aborted attempt last month to topple his government. For
  9. only the second time, Venezuelans had the chance to elect
  10. directly 22 state governors and 282 mayors. People responded,
  11. all right -- by throwing their support behind the opposition.
  12. Voters' rejection of the ruling Democratic Action party was
  13. widely interpreted as a sign of dissatisfaction with Venezuela's
  14. inflated economy and political corruption. Candidates from the
  15. President's party lost four of 11 state governorships.

  18.     A WALL OF DEATH

  20.     For several hundred Bolivian gold miners, death arrived last
  21. Monday with a swiftness that was quite literally breathtaking as
  22. an entire mountainside collapsed on their heads. More than 150
  23. residents of the town of Llipi were confirmed dead, and hundreds
  24. more are believed buried beneath a 35-ft. wall of rain-loosened
  25. mud that cut through the remote mining camp. Although Llipi is
  26. only 120 miles from La Paz, relief convoys required 15 to 20
  27. hours to negotiate mountain roads. Ten rescuers were killed when
  28. their bus plummeted from a cliff, and a handful of helicopters
  29. fought heavy rains to deliver badly needed food and medicine.
