  11. those stodgy readers who regard the inclusion of photos in the
  12. magazine with the same degree of distaste most people reserve
  13. for fake leather. RICHARD AVEDON, the fabled photographer who
  14. has shot everyone from Brooke Shields to Alger Hiss, has joined
  15. the New Yorker as the magazine's first-ever staff lensman. Brown
  16. promises that Avedon's pictures "will provide an explosion of
