  4. Lloyd Bentsen is said to be Clinton's first choice for Treasury

  8.     A Yuletide flurry of cherry statistics has done nothing to
  9. shake Bill Clinton's focus on the U.S. economy as his top
  10. priority. The President-elect's first major appointments,
  11. expected this week, will be his economic team. Clinton's choice
  12. for Treasury Secretary, aides say, is Lloyd Bentsen, the Senate
  13. Finance Committee chairman. The senior Senator from Texas, who
  14. was nominated for Vice President in 1988, is seen as having the
  15. stature and experience to steer Clinton's economic plan through
  16. Congress. Investment banker Roger Altman, a Treasury official in
  17. the Carter Administration, is said to be the leading contender
  18. for deputy secretary.

  20.     Top spot in the new Economic Security Council is likely to
  21. go to investment banker Robert Rubin or Harvard lecturer and
  22. transition-team adviser Robert Reich, who is also a candidate
  23. for head of the Council of Economic Advisers. Clinton wants to
  24. get the team in place before the economic retreat scheduled for
  25. Dec. 14-15 in Little Rock.
