  4. A Senate report finds no evidence of a hostage deal, but
  5. questions remain

  8.     It was an exoneration without much conviction. The Senate
  9. Foreign Relations Committee's investigation of allegations that
  10. the Reagan campaign connived with Iranian authorities to delay
  11. the release of 52 American hostages during the 1980 election
  12. concluded that "the great weight of evidence is that there was
  13. no such deal." But the committee report did charge that the
  14. conduct of Reagan campaign chairman and later CIA Director
  15. William Casey verged "on the outer limits of propriety" when he
  16. secretly gathered intelligence on the delicate U.S.-Iranian
  17. hostage negotiations in 1980. The investigation, run on a
  18. shoestring budget, never did find such critical evidence as
  19. Casey's passport or hundreds of hours of vital FBI surveillance
  20. tapes. Perhaps a parallel House investigation expected next year
  21. will be more enlightening.
