  4. Four Detroit policemen face charges for the death of a black
  5. motorist

  8.     The charges came quickly and hard: murder. Manslaughter. And
  9. the message was clear: Detroit is not Los Angeles. Criminal
  10. charges have been brought against four Detroit police officers in
  11. the killing of black motorist Malice Green, allegedly beaten to
  12. death by police earlier this month. Two white officers, Larry
  13. Nevers and Walter Budzyn, will be tried on second-degree-murder
  14. charges and could get life in prison if convicted. Freddie
  15. Douglas, a black cop, stands accused of involuntary
  16. manslaughter, which carries a maximum 15-year sentence, and
  17. willful neglect of duty, punishable by as much as a year.
  18. Officer Robert Lessnau, who is white, faces a term of as much
  19. as 10 years if found guilty of assault. Defense lawyers have
  20. come out swinging, playing up an autopsy report that shows Green
  21. had traces of alcohol and cocaine in his body. The next hearing
  22. is Dec. 14.
