  7. the master mind," says a Chinese aphorism. To speed up Deng
  8. Xiaoping's market-style reforms, China's pragmatic leaders are
  9. tapping the mind of a modern-day Zhuge Liang: University of
  10. Pennsylvania professor Lawrence Klein. The American Nobel
  11. laureate in economics in 1980 was appointed as an adviser to the
  12. State Planning Commission, which oversees the industrial sector.
  13. They hope Klein's wisdom can help them build a "socialist
  14. market economy," Deng's newest oxymoron.

  19.     Maybe the passing of time eased the emotional sting, but the
  20. disclosure still had a shocking impact. According to records
  21. released by a retired Russian army general, Dmitri Volkogonov,
  22. 119 Americans were held in camps as Soviet prisoners of war
  23. following World War II. Of this group, 18 died in custody (some
  24. by execution), several were interned for lengthy sentences, and
  25. others were eventually released, settling in Soviet territory.
  26. According to the general, none of the remaining Americans are
  27. currently being held against their will.
