  6.     Look out, California. When governor Pete Wilson and the
  7. legislature finally closed that huge budget gap two months ago,
  8. they employed a bit of creative bookkeeping, including borrowing
  9. from anticipated revenues. But those optimistic assumptions
  10. collapsed as the economic slump persisted. Already more than $2
  11. billion in the hole, the new California budget may come up short
  12. a stunning $6 billion by Christmas.
