  4. A vaccine made from patients' own cells helps treat B-cell
  5. lymphoma

  8.     The human immune system is a powerful defense against
  9. assaults by bacteria and viruses from outside the body, but now
  10. scientists may have found a way to turn it against a homegrown
  11. assailant: cancer. A research group at Stanford University has
  12. developed a vaccine that stimulates the body to fight B-cell
  13. lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system that strikes 20,000
  14. Americans every year and is especially hard to treat. They did
  15. it by removing cancerous cells from nine patients and treating
  16. the cells to make them more irritating to the immune system.
  17. Then they were reinjected under the patients' skin. In two
  18. cases, as reported in the New England Journal of Medicine,
  19. tumors actually shrank, while five other patients showed
  20. markedly increased immune-system activity. The vaccine isn't a
  21. preventive and can only be used on a single patient and against
  22. this type of cancer. But the technique may someday be used on
  23. other cancers and also on such diseases as multiple sclerosis,
  24. diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis.
