  6.     Want a preview of how fiercely insurance companies might
  7. battle Bill Clinton's health-care proposals? Look at the way
  8. national insurers are pouring cash into California to defeat
  9. PROPOSITION 166, which would require all employers to provide
  10. health coverage for workers. Fearing that medical costs could
  11. billow under the plan, insurance firms with headquarters outside
  12. the state have put up more than 80% of the $2.3 million that
  13. opponents have raised to defeat it. The companies also fear that
  14. Clinton's proposal for a government-run program for employees
  15. not covered at work could lead to federal control of health
  16. insurance. Frets one executive about the Clinton plan: "It's the
  17. camel's nose under the tent."
