  4. Shevardnadze wins approval to lead Georgia out of war

  7.     Georgian leader Eduard Shevardnadze could barely suppress his
  8. jubilance at what he called the "embarrassing" results in the
  9. parliamentary elections. In the first balloting held in the
  10. republic since President Zviad Gamsakhurdia was forcibly
  11. deposed last January, Georgians by a majority of 95% endorsed
  12. the former Soviet Foreign Minister's uncontested bid to become
  13. chairman of a new parliament. Shevardnadze promised his new
  14. constituents that he would do everything he could "not to leave
  15. them disappointed."

  17.     Shevardnadze had staked his reputation on the
  18. parliamentary elections. The gamble paid off. Georgians turned
  19. out to vote in such huge numbers -- over 80% cast ballots in
  20. most regions -- that many had to wait for hours in line. Armed
  21. with such a mandate, Shevardnadze hopes to revive peace talks
  22. with Moscow over the Abkhazian crisis, and promptly moved last
  23. week to set up a new defense council to bring his own military
  24. forces under control.
