  5. ballet dancer and former director of the Paris Opera Ballet;
  6. from pericarditis and, reportedly, from AIDS. Born in Irkutsk
  7. and trained in Leningrad, Nureyev displayed expressiveness and
  8. mastery as a dancer, which won him a solo role with the Kirov
  9. in 1958; three years later, he defected on tour in Paris and
  10. became a celebrated dancer in the West.
