  4. Yeltsin makes life miserable for the rival he once helped save

  7.     Mikhail Gorbachev was never as popular at home as abroad. But
  8. last week the former Soviet President's status in Russia
  9. reached an all-time low. The once omnipotent Gorbachev has been
  10. waging -- and lately losing -- a war of recrimination with his
  11. former rival, Russian President Boris Yeltsin. First Yeltsin's
  12. government barred Gorbachev from leaving the country and fined
  13. him because he refused to testify at a trial investigating the
  14. ostracized Communist Party. Then Yeltsin ordered the police to
  15. seize the Moscow headquarters of the Gorbachev Foundation, the
  16. former leader's political think tank. "This is all happening in
  17. a country that its leaders call democratic," Gorbachev
  18. complained as police guarded the building's entrance.

  20.     The eviction came one day after Gorbachev lambasted
  21. Yeltsin and his government in a newspaper interview, charging
  22. that the Russian leader had failed and should hand over power
  23. to a governing state council. The reprisal seemed petty, and it
  24. diverted public attention away from the real business of the
  25. week: Yeltsin's major address to parliament in which he defended
  26. his economic-reform program, criticized three Ministers of his
  27. own government for poor performance, and offered to cooperate
  28. with some of his political opponents.
