  6.     As Congress wrapped up its business last week, effusive
  7. farewells were given for Senators and Congressmen who will not
  8. be returning to Capitol Hill. Some kudos fell a little flat.
  9. Congressman Bill Dannemeyer, improbably lauded as "the
  10. conscience of the House," will long be remembered for inserting
  11. into the 1989 Congressional Record a description of homosexual
  12. lovemaking so meanspirited that it was later excised from the
  13. permanent text. Senator Steve Symms, praised for bravely
  14. defending the rights of gun owners, is notable for little else.
  15. Senator Alan Dixon was lionized as "one of the most fiercely
  16. independent Democrats" in Congress. Funny. He is noted for being
  17. so chummy with lobbyists that he is known around the Hill as "Al
  18. the Pal."
