  7.     The joyous homecoming for this summer's little League World
  8. Champions turned sour even before the last shred of confetti hit
  9. the ground. Local sports columnists claimed that as many as half
  10. the players on the team from Zamboanga City in the southern
  11. Philippines were over the 12-year age limit (or 13 if the
  12. player's birthday is after Aug. 1). Little League officials in
  13. Manila stonewalled efforts to certify the players' ages, and
  14. most of the Philippine press and public seemed to view the
  15. accusations as an American plot.

  17.     Last week the manager of the team dropped another
  18. bombshell: forget about being overage -- most of the team wasn't
  19. even from Zamboanga City. League officials in Manila had packed
  20. the squad with ringers even though national All-Star squads are
  21. barred from the World Series. Little League officials in
  22. Williamsport, Pennsylvania, declared eight Philippine players
  23. ineligible Thursday and ordered a forfeit of their team's 15-4
  24. victory last month over Long Beach, California. The newly
  25. crowned California team got together Thursday night for a quiet
  26. celebration at a park. "I think this is a real big thing," said
  27. pitcher Randall Shelley, 12. "But it would have been better if
  28. we had won it on the field."
