  4. California battles a wildfire in the land of Mark Twain and
  5. Bret Harte

  8.     Calaveras County was once the heart of the Gold Rush. This
  9. August the rush has been for the exits. Stubborn forest fires
  10. swept through drought-stricken timber and brush, threatening a
  11. score of scenic small towns, once made famous by Mark Twain and
  12. Bret Harte, and forcing nearly 14,000 residents to flee. Nearly
  13. 4,000 fire fighters labored throughout the week, bringing the
  14. flames under control just as another wildfire broke out in
  15. Northern California's Shasta County.

  17.     Several hungry fire fighters who tried to use state-issued
  18. meal vouchers were turned away by local restaurant owners who
  19. didn't trust the budgetless state government to pay their bills.
  20. "It's understandable," said Lisa Boyd, spokesman for the state
  21. Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, "but no fire
  22. fighters are going hungry." Other Calaveras County restaurants
  23. were willing to take a chance and feed the exhausted smoke
  24. eaters.
