  6.     Viktor Oshchenko, a diplomat in the Russian Embassy in
  7. Paris, was a British double agent for years. Last month Moscow
  8. asked him to come home. Fearing the worst, he defected to
  9. London. MI-6 is now debriefing him at a safe house. He must know
  10. plenty: Moscow has since recalled at least a dozen of his fellow
  11. spies from Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Belgium and the
  12. Netherlands. Oshchenko specialized in stealing science and
  13. technology secrets. Says a senior British diplomat: "The
  14. Russians' need for everything is more desperate than ever
  15. because of the country's abysmal shape."
