  4. The L.A. Four are indicted again, this time on civil rights
  5. charges
  6.

  8.     Prosecutors got a second chance last week in Los Angeles. In
  9. a move reminiscent of the 1960s, the Federal Government handed
  10. down indictments against the four police officers whose
  11. acquittals last April set off the worst riots in two decades.
  12. As expected, they are charged with violating King's civil rights
  13. when they arrested him on the night of March 3, 1991.

  15.     Three of the men, Los Angeles police department officers
  16. Theodore Briseno, Timothy Wind and Laurence Powell, were charged
  17. with willfully using unreasonable force. A second count accuses
  18. Sergeant Stacey Koon, the supervising officer at the scene, of
  19. failing to prevent the assault. The trial date will be set at
  20. their arraignment hearing.

  22.     The federal case faces the same challenges as the state
  23. trial, including the tendency of jurors to sympathize with
  24. police officers dealing with events in the line of duty. And
  25. while the indictments brought a brief moment of satisfaction to
  26. the still-recovering community, Angelenos are already worrying
  27. about the consequences of yet another acquittal and whether the
  28. prolonged legal process will be worth it.
